Ok 2017, slow down a little. School holidays for most, and I’m glad of this 2 weeks off and time to spend with the #Thomboys especially as the eldest is in year 6 and working really hard with the continuous regime of tests for Reading, Maths and English in order, like in his mocks, he passes. The strain on him is awful, as is the worry; and we are NOT pushy or pressing parents. I think the pressure on children and teachers is immense, god help those schools who have no parental support, it must be so hard.
So, i'm very much looking forward for us all to be taking some time out and doing some fun things, some local as well as travelling further afield such as the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and maybe The Yorkshire Wildlife Park, let’s hope the weather is on side; it's a good job we have plenty of museums on hand if rain decides to show it’s wet face. - see last weeks blog for links to all things Half Term
It’s been a really busy few weeks, lots going on from decorating the house, organising builders, to supporting the Garforth Community Feastival, working with local businesses, new members, sorting out Easter whilst kids are in school, along with Easter school activities. Luckily there is always time for me in there somewhere. After looking back at some of my Facebook live video’s I realised my eyebrows really needed some attention, so I had them properly shaped this week by the lovely
Chloe Yeatman, https://www.facebook.com/ChloeYeatmanMakeUpArtist/?fref=ts
Who else has the Thom family used this week?

Chris’ Fruit and Veg

It’s easy to use local, just see what’s on offer and then use them; they'll love you for it
Touching on the Garforth Feastival, there are a fair few great people in the background pulling together to bring Garforth it's first ever food feast, which is it's main premise. A fair few business are involved including local people from our community, who want to see this project really take off and leave it with a continuing legacy to do more great things - so put it in your diary NOW

Back in the saddle (literally)
Hope all the Mums out there had a lovely Mothers Day last weekend! For mine, I was surprised with a horseback ride at Garforth Riding School (https://garforthstables.wordpress.com/) on
Nanny Goat Lane. I loved horses growing up - as a young girl I took riding lessons, but haven't been on a horse in about 20 years. So it was a really sweet and a thoughtful surprise.
Graham at Garforth Riding School was great - we had a nice steady ride through some local bridleways. It was a beautiful sunny day and really peaceful away from the roads and traffic. If you're interested in going riding, I recommend giving them a call.
The best part out of the whole afternoon, was forgetting about everything else except being outside, enjoying the ride. I love being a Mum, but it was nice not feeling like a Mum for a little while. For once, it was nice to be... just me.

Happy Mother's Day!
This is a special one for me - my first as a Mum. They say being a Mum is the hardest but most rewarding job in the world. Seven months in, I've come to appreciate how true this is. Cliche but true.
The responsibility of looking after another human before yourself, the sleepless nights, endless laundry, and never really having a proper break - it's tough. But watching my little boy see the world through new eyes, learning and taking everything in for the first time - it's pretty amazing. Seeing the goofy smile of my little Yorkshireman and hearing his giggles make it worth the while, and then some.
It's a tough job but the best job. So, to all you amazing mums out there, have a wonderful Mother's Day.
Now I've got my wellies on, ready for my Mother's Day surprise from my boys! Until next week...

Welcome RK Harris Fruiterers to Main Street, A lot if with opinions!
As I mentioned on Facebook this week Yes, we have a new Veg shop opening and I can see why people are questioning; 'What, another veg shop, when we have two already?' Everybody questions a duplication of business and of course, I'm concerned for our other offerings, but hopefully with approximately 20,000 people in Garforth alone and 76,000 on the periphery, there is room for harmony. It's the way people question things is what I don't understand.
Do we know what they're selling? Do we know what prices they are going to be? Do we need to give new businesses a hard time when they arrive on our high street? NO
For all those with an opinion!
Did you help or speak to the landlord about what you would like to see or have any influence in helping what could take over it?
We did have Ladycares, a unique independent shop, but you didn't use it enough, so..... it had to close!
The bigger picture is, the shop is now filled, and the people coming are independent and giving local people jobs !
It gives us choice and if it brings more people in to shop on the high street because there's another price choice, then we shouldn't really complain.
I shop at Chris' Fruit & Veg and at The Greengrocer for everything fresh, all of the time and have done for years; and I'll probably shop at RK Harris too. If it means I spend less time and money in a supermarket.... great!
Have you thought about getting in touch with RK Harris and asking them to bring in things that aren't on offer anywhere else?
We currently have 2 empty shops, one has been empty for a long time, who's up for volunteering to get this filled? MOGS?
Saving Parlington will be back on Main Street tomorrow morning, giving you one last chance to out in your objections, should you wish to. Deadline is Monday 27th March. Objections
Hearing a new owner will be taking over the unit that currently houses Sweetshakes, no news on what's happening after the take over; only rumours
As you have will have seen this week, Absolutely Fabulous have been having a closing day sale, but don’t worry, all is not as it seems, they are selling off some fabulous products but they’re not going anywhere. You will soon seen their new brand and the launch of their new shop, so keep following and I will be posting all the information about it as soon as it comes in. Good News stories, we like them.
As Mentioned in a previous blog some weeks ago, I have been looking at ShopAppy coming to Garforth and have had a few lovely meetings with its founder Jackie Mulligan. I have now invited Jackie back to Garforth so she can come and do a presentation to you and our local traders, shop keepers, so come along to find out more. On Wednesday 12th April at 5.30pm at Pride and Produce, who will also have their counter open in order you can still buy refreshments.

What do you do.... actually, If you're a true Irish person, you're not reading this as you're already on the Guinness, have a great day celebrating the good things.
As well as St Patricks Day, it’s also World Sleep Day – now this is my kind of day! I could easily be sponsored to do this… now the question is, do I continue to write the blog or go to sleep? Zzzzz
#MOG (Moaners Of Garforth)
I see people have been complaining on social media, this week, as they do! Love that people can say what they like behind blue light yet if they were asked to stand up on a stage in front a load of strangers would they truly say how they feel?
Most of the information or annoyances as and will always be about the negatives living in Garforth; to be fair I don't come across many! I find this very frustrating, where do people think we live? In a gated community in the middle of Johannesburg ? Hey, stuff goes on, some we like, some we don’t but if we keep shouting about some of the rubbish things that happen then seem worse because everybody is shouting and sharing about it STOP AND THINK. Just imagine if more people shouted about the really good things that go on in Garforth and how good the place we live really is!
To give you some of the great things we need to shout about MORE
We have a fair amount of green space to play (yes, more would be nice)
We have 3 fairly new parks
We have a skate park
We have a healthy high street
We have so many volunteering groups that make living in Garforth easier and creating a pleasant place to be, such as;
Garforth in Bloom,
Garforth Neighbourhood Planning Forum,
Garforth Flood Group
Garforth & District Lions Club
Great local Churches doing great things
We have a great police community that keeps us up to date with what’s going on, so we can all be more vigilant and aware of the idiots!
And If you don’t fully know what our local businesses are offering, or you have a perception about what you think we don't have, then you’re not following The Main Deal enough : )
Get championing our town and not dissing it; where does negativity get anyone?
SAVE PARLINGTON has been prevalent on social media and on Main Street last Saturday. The steering group for this have to be patted on the back for such steely determination and for telling us, the local community all about it and the impact it will have on Garforth should it go ahead. You have up until the 27th March to object

Until next week..............
With hubby away in Warsaw and my days filled to the brim as well as juggling kids and general things, it’s been a fun week! Put it this way, the wine bottle usually gets opened on Friday Eve; that’s Thursday evening to the people that don’t celebrate it! It was open this week on Tuesday.... I'm looking forward to the weekend
What do you suggest?
I asked on a post yesterday. If we could fill the few empty shops on Main Street with Retail shops, what would you choose? Lots of information came back about what people would like to see. A whole host of ideas of shops, some we have already had, but as nobody shopped in them, they disappeared. Like the suggested pet shop we once had but now people want one back!
Anyhoo… I feel in today’s world of everything, far too expensive to survive and something that’s not going to change no matter how much we cry about it..... and breathe and how much Landlords are charging and how much of a joke the government think it’s ok to charge what they charge in rates... and breathe, the best idea going forward is to create combination shops, and if more people came and used the dual shop then rents and rates wouldn't be such a big deal
A Vintage Shoe shop with a vintage tea room
A pet shop that hosts a vet
Children’s Clothes shop with a corner for weekly kid’s activities and learning
From the input from yesterday’s post, my suggestions are;
Our current DIY shop to have more of a selection of Decorating materials such as wallpaper, perhaps with demonstrations where local traders could come in and show how it’s done! Painting, plastering, they could even use this platform to do local advertising my showing their work!
HOW TO FIX idea, things rather than chuck away. This could be good for our older traders that are now retired and could give some help again! - could this work in one of our existing shops or library?
People have mentioned Boots or a Superdrug, Boots is an unlikely shop that would fit into the empty shops we have, but FYI – Lloyds Chemist on Main Street, may be small but they have a great selection of Makeup, Perfume, Essentials and innovative goods as well as prescriptions, medicines and remedies. I got a few gifts from their last year!. However, Ladycares did offer more!
Thanks to all those of you who have supported me so much over the last few months, well and always do. This week, I attended this year’s Inspirational Women of the Community Awards at Victoria Hall in Leeds Town Hall on International Women’s Day and what a day it was. I didn’t come away with a gold owl award; but myself and Pam Dolan (my lovely guest on the day) did have an idea that if she distracted the Awards minder, I could punch the security guy in the neck and we could run away with one… forever the Scouser!
However I kept professional and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole day. Listening to some amazing and inspirational stories and how some women have gone from nothing to creating something absolutely wonderful in their community, despite lots of adversity and some serious personal issues.
I CAN’T COMPLAIN…..
This is the third nomination I have received in 2017, to be recognised and nominated is a really big thing for me, so thank you. I now have a lovely framed certificate. Fingers crossed for the Yorkshire Choice Awards on 1st April.
On International Women's Day, it's also amazing what you learn about the women population in your city.

Love Trees, Save Parlington
Hubby and I took little T on a long walk in his new backpack the other day. The beginning of our journey took us through Parlington Woods on our way from Garforth to Aberford.
Although the weather was a little bleak, it was still nice to walk through the woods, listening to the wind through the trees and the birds up above.
If you live in the area you will no doubt have seen the signs, 'Save Parlington, say NO to 5000 new homes'; unfortunately, a section of the woods is earmarked for development. I'm no expert on urban planning, and I recognise the need for new homes in the area - but surely there are better sites for this, which would mean the destruction of a green belt area.
If you feel the same way, there is still a chance to voice your concerns. You can sign and submit an objection letter, available locally at Cielo, Sweet Shakes, Bella Rose Beauty, and Freshly Made. Also, this Saturday 11th March the Save Parlington Action Group will be with Councillors Mark Dobson and Sarah Jane Field from 9am until 1pm on Main St (by Co-op) - pop by for a chat and an objection letter.
Deadline for letters is 27th March!
Having grown up in Canada surrounded by trees and nature, it's important to me that my children will as well. I will be submitting an objection letter.
You can keep up to date with what's happening by joining the Save Parlington Facebook group or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Find me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @mumingarforth.
On the back of this and for your information
Find out what impact development at Parlington will have on GARFORTH residents. Save Parlington Action Group will be with Councillors Mark Dobson and Sarah Jane Field from 9am until 1pm on Main St (by Co-op) This Saturday 11 March. Come along and see us for a chat and an objection letter.
#WOTS (Word on the Street)
Garforth in Bloom are back out digging again, thank you. It’s lovely to see all the daffodils coming up around Garforth and in some new plots too. You can help on any of the BIG DIGS they have planned. http://www.garforthinbloom.org.uk/ you can also find out what they have been up to over the winter months and what's happening now we're coming into spring.
Noticed that the area in front of the wall of East Garforth Train station has been cleared, doesn't it looks much nicer! Wouldn't it be nice to have a woodland theme painted on the wall ? Greenery every time of the year.
OK, it's an obvious big thing this week. Wetherspoons finally opens and nope, not been in yet, I will pop in when the madness dies down.
But Shock, Horror!
Who hasn’t been able to park? Even the Car Park on Barley Hill has been full!
Who’s seen some new faces around Garforth?
Who complained about the toilets being upstairs (really!)
Who had to share the information on social media that the Disabled loo (downstairs) was leaking! (come on)
A lot of buzz about the place, let's just hope are other food outlets can survive the #noveltyperiod Don't forget them people.
Now you have been for your pub fayre and a pint…. Go on, get shopping, although someone pointed out on social media. ‘I thought, wouldn’t it be nice to have a mooch round some nice shops after we come out of Wetherspoon’s’ YES…. Open the blinkers and get on with it; I know it might mean you have to walk up and down main street, but it will help burn off lunch!
Wouldn't these be great on the new virgin boxes currently being installed around Garforth?
Open your eyes and see what I see #shoplocal
Until next week..............
Cold Cuts day! I’m sure this is referring to meats and not a cut that has gone cold; what a day that would be, anyway whilst we’re on the subject, they do some splendid Charcuterie at The Station House and you can buy it by the slices to take away… yum
Enjoy your cold cuts!
I had a fun morning with the Thomboy who needed my creative skills in a Stay and Learn session in his class this morning, the one thing I’ve learnt is, I can’t Build a Boat and he wanted me to Stay : ( But doing this job allows me to be flexible; bending over backwards in lots of ways
Well the talk of Garforth has been all about the opening of Mr Weather and Mr Spoon, I hear Traders have been invited along with our local Councillors to go in for trial night, so I’m sure you will hear more about it before their officially opening on Tuesday.
On Saturday I visited Augustus Court on their 1 year Birthday celebrations. They have come so far in this first year and have reason to celebrate as they are in the finals for …. Award. They had a plan of 2 years to fill the 58 rooms, but alone in this first year, they’re nearly at full capacity. The home is proving so popular as not only is it luxurious but the team who look after the residents are so good, work well and they really do bend over backwards for to give it that home from home feel.
Congratulations Augustus on your one year Anniversary
Surprise through the door!
Well if you haven’t seen on my social media sites already, this lovely little letter came through the door this week, congratulating and informing me that I have been nominated for an, Inspirational Women of the Community Award as part of Leeds City Councils Celebrating Women in Achievement campaign. I will be heading off to Victoria Hall next week, 8th March which in turn is, International Women’s day - apparently, we have the power to change the world! Good strap line.
I’ve always been a woman who thinks that both sexes bring a lot to this world and controversially I don’t think we can be equal (on everything) However, I quite love Woman’s Day, it’s something to consider.
We are inspired by incredible women every day. Women who are raising kids and building businesses. Women who are hiring their neighbours and transforming communities. Women like you, or your mother, daughter, sister or friend.
This International Women’s Day, we are proud to take the #PledgeForParity because we know first-hand that empowered women can change the world. When women are treated as equals, they do more for their families and communities than we can imagine. Be a part of our celebration of amazing women around the world and right here at home.
Tuesday evening was our 6th Garforth Hour LIVE event with our lovely hosts Pride and Produce. After an already long day shift, Gary and Sarah kindly opened their doors to greet our Tuesday Tweeters, who are local businesses within the Garforth Community and surrounding area. The idea of our live nights is to let the people who tweet, greet each other in an informal setting. By hosting a LIVE event it means as a business other local people come to you, and usually local businesses haven’t stepped into other local businesses before. Pride and Produce were wonderful giving everyone Coffee and Tea and supplying them with scrummy pancakes with all the trimmings.
Thierry Dumouchel was also there and he brought some lovely raspberry and strawberry almond cakes; Just in case P&P’s Crepes were crap…. Love a bit of local business banter.

Keeping active with Bumps and Babes
I'll admit, I was a bit concerned about how having a baby would change my body, especially since I've had some struggles with my weight in the past.
To help keep me active during my pregnancy, I started going to the Aquanatal class run by Bumps and Babes. It's run by two midwives, Shelley and Sharon, so they have lots of knowledge and experience working with mums and mums-to-be. The class was held locally at Garforth Holiday Inn.
I really enjoyed the classes and met lots of nice people. I liked feeling weightless in the water and it helped keep me moving until baby T arrived.
After he was born and I got the all-clear from the GP, I started going to the Bumps and Babes Fit Mummies class (held at Garforth Premier World Fitness). It's eased me back into a fitness routine, and being able to exercise with baby T in a sling is great. The group of mums that go are really nice as well.
And you know what? Because I kept active, I'm already starting to feel like my old self again, so there was no need to worry in the first place.
If you're looking for exercise tailored towards the needs of mummies and mummies to be, you should definitely check out Bumps and Babes. They also run other classes such as baby massage and baby swimming. Visit www.bumpsandbabes-yorkshire.co.uk and/or email email@example.com for more information.

FYI, the Aagrah has released this statement
Aagrah Garforth food samples tested clear outbreak not linked to Aagrah Food
Environmental Health Leeds investigating the outbreak of last month’s cases of illness have confirmed that the food samples tested from Aagrah Garforth have tested clear and are not linked to the outbreak.
Environment Health Leeds (EHL) and Public Health England are still conducting their investigation to determine the cause. At this point there is insufficient evidence to conclude the reason of the outbreak, one possibility being viral, has not been ruled out.
Aagrah’s greatest priority is to ensure the safety of all of the food we serve, and to maintain customer’s confidence.
The safety of our customers and integrity of our food supply has always been our highest priority. We use fresh ingredients in order to serve our customers the highest-quality, best-tasting food we can. If there are opportunities to do better, we will push ourselves to find them and enhance our already high standards for food safety.
The company has a stringent health and safety policy including:
• H&S and Food Hygiene
• In house fully qualified H&S officer
• Up to date HACCP system
• Inspections by independent Health and safety officer
• Full traceability of all our food products
Manager Wasim Aslam said “we are delighted the food samples have tested clear, we are grateful to all our loyal customers who showed support and faith in Aagrah by continuing to dine with us during the investigating period”.
