Its the May Bank Holiday and Tour De Yorkshire weekend #CELEBRATETHEGOOD
A busy week in the office, making time to polish my accounts for my Self Assessment; thank goodness I have a great accountant at Business Works who makes life easier.
Augustus Court, Meridian Care Home - Events
I have attended two great events at Augustus Court this week.
Open day to the public - Saturday 23rd April
What a great and fun day this was, the home was busy with lots of people and having to eat beautiful afternoon cakes and tea! Garforth Community Choir were also singing which is always great fun, seeing people joining in, tapping feet and swinging to the music, especially the lovely resident of Augustus Court, Doris... a lovable character of the home who was happy dancing away with her zimmer frame whilst the choir was belting out a few great tunes..
Dorinda’s school of Dance was also performing with many of the young girls who attend the dance school, some were so weenie #verycute they put on a fabulous performance,. I was looking over at the residents watching and you could see a little twinkle in their eye, as though they were reminiscing about their youth Well done girls. #greattalent
Official Open Day – Wednesday 27th April
A very busy afternoon with the staff, residents, their families, the developers, the interior designers and the special guests, Angela Rippon and Leeds Mayor along with Garforth Lions and Garforth in Bloomers, more afternoon tea and cakes #itsahardjob a great pianist playing jazz and lots of members of the HC group and PR team making this a wonderful afternoon.
Augustus Court is officially open
The staff have worked really hard over the last few months putting on great days as well as running the home with new residents in attendance. Go along, pop in and meet the great Team, speak to the lovely Mary Usher, the Care Homes Team Manager or phone and ask for details. Telephone 0333 999 8727
There are lots of things planned over this Bank Holiday weekend from
#WOTS (word on the street)
The metal barriers around The Liberal Club (new Wetherspoons Site) is to protect against vandalism so I’m afraid you can’t get too excited yet - I did see this week on one of the community pages; someone was starting another rumour about Wetherspoons no longer coming because Sainsbury’s had said no to them delivering on their land #utterrubbish .. Technical words for, that’s not true!
THE LADY CARES - SET TO LEAVE
Some of you may have heard already, but the lovely shop, The Lady Cares will be closing by the end of this year, I know for one, I will be extremely sad for this to go and for lots of reasons,
Domino's is coming........ Just a rumour at the minute, but I am checking it out to be sure
Genix Dentist is due to complete its expansion, downstairs at the end of May, #oldhabits #illuminatedsigns going up
No signs yet for the new Southern Fried Chicken shop – what do you think, it will be called?
Garforth Fried Chicks!
Chickens of Garforth
Northern Fried Chicken!
Yorkshire Fried birds!
Fun guessing game, but it’s likely it will be called SFC
I believe Louis Theroux was also in Garforth last week, in Daniel Yorath House by all accounts filming for one of his television shows!
I see the development for the former depot, Green Lane is back in planning for Consent Agreement or approval is required for certain conditions, this may explain why no work has been carried out on this site for a while.
Until next week.......
MAKE THE EFFORT NOT AN EXCUSE
Earth Day - Celebrate and protect our natural environment, have you ever thought about starting or joining a group that helps looks after our environment? Garforth in Bloom perhaps or The Garforth Flood Group and listening out on social media when Jackie Simpson kindly organises a Tidy up day, which happens about three times a year? Leeds City Council Waste advisors are always giving out information about how we can recycle and reuse, including leftovers this week. It's a great page to follow and find out information about how to keep our environment clean and tidy and less wasteful – give them a follow.

A random week for me this week – I like random, it shakes it up a little
Garforth Arts Festival, meeting - Main Street Festival #watchthisspace
Meeting new businesses, Station House Cafe, Vogue Bar and Opium Beauty

She has a good following of people and uses great products to make sure you get a good even, all over tan. If you want a great colour but you don’t have a lot of time, then Sophie is your lady. Get in touch for details

Meeting a local business owner to see if they will take over my position as Chair of the Traders Association from next week. This has been something I have worked on, separately from The Main Deal, but organically TMD has had its influences for promoting things we’ve decided to do. The trader’s team have been brilliant to work with and I hope now it’s fully established, whoever takes it on, will continue to grow and sustain the teamwork, keep it going
Christmas Committee Meeting chatting with bigger commercial businesses about sponsorship and talking to the committee about where we are at, Debbie from Angels and Butterflies is really onboard with organising the Christmas stalls for the Saturday and the Sunday, some exciting things to come this year. You can now follow the new Twitter account that has been created to keep up to date with all what’s going on
#WOTS (word on the Street)
So, the new Bar Vogue has been the topic of conversation this week, since the owner put up there first post. For your information, and I can only tell you a little as they want to and understandably, leave some elements of surprise. So after our meeting, this is what I know;
I met with three of the lovely ladies who will be running the new Beauty Salon, what I know, and what I’m allowed to tell you are 2 different things
Open day will be Saturday 7th May – some great raffle prizes and cool surprises on the day of opening
You may already know these ladies
They’re not new to the street
They won’t be doing massages and facials
The will be doing Contour tanning though!
Their sign will stand out as will their shop #brightlights
Station House Cafe
Met with the lovely owners last Saturday, Joanne and....... Luigi; the Italian influence to what will be a great concept of foods from their Breakfast menu through to their cafe menu; coming in the not too distant future. The Station House will be lovely when they have finished; it’s a lot bigger than you envisage and they have a real task on their hands to get it to how they want it. They are extremely passionate and enthusiastic to get it up and running as it’s taken a long time just getting the keys!
If you drive to the station and park, you may have noticed should some of the changes, the exterior of the building is much cleaner, fresher and brighter. Luigi has spent a considerable amount of time tidying it all up, making it look so much better. I will be meeting with Joanne again in the next couple of weeks helping get their social media off the ground. I may have some more news for you then. Be excited, there are lots of great things to follow.
Taste of China have moved to Barley Hill Road and their old property was left vacant for only a few weeks,. The Owner is now transforming it into a Southern Fried Chicken shop, (not KFC) I just hope with our good reputation for keeping Main Street as clean as possible that they keep this up, otherwise I might have to ask the the new chair of the traders to pay a visit! Not sure how it will be perceived by many, but it’s clear, the young folk of Garforth will be happy!
There is still time to put in your objections/opinions for Miami should you wish for them to be heard, as I have mentioned in past blogs, I think Lidl may be a good thing to come next to Tesco, but it’s ultimately the two retail units they’re proposing and the family pub I have reservations about!
Have your say, you must log in first to comment;
TOMORROW from 2pm
Augustus Court, Meridian Care Home will be having an open Day, come along and see this wonderful home, meet the staff and listen to the Garforth Community Choir as well as one of the local dance and theatre schools perform, if you’re there come and say hello, I will be there with my Mum; I think she may want to put her name down!
If it’s good, SHARE IT
Until next week.......
Mmm, not sure a day of silence would work for me!
It’s been a busy fortnight with the children being off, and we’re just back from Legoland, it was great, amazing, such fun with three mad boys, 10, 6 and 45! We also stopped in on the Queen, at Windsor Castle, she was handing out OBE’s and things.... no sneaky peak at the celebs though, not even HRH herself! But we were lucky to have great weather; it truly felt like spring down south. I did promise on Tuesday evening whilst tweeting on Garforth Hour that I would do my best to tow back the sun; but it didn’t work.
Back to it next week with the kids back in school. It’s nice to hear that some of our shops over the last fortnight have been busier... let’s keep it up people, even if you just buy 1 thing a week from an independent business, it’s not all about the food! For example:
Who are you picking to cover your business insurance? Use local
Who are you choosing to cover your accounts? Use local
Who is maintaining your car? Use local
Where are you buying your new windows and doors? Use local
I talk to a lot of people, all of the time, a lot of the time, (see, a day of silence would be just rubbish) when people think of shopping local, it means buying food shopping, locally, why would they when it's much easier to do so in the supermarket,.... yes, we all use supermarkets, we have done for years, that will never change, but just think about what the local food shops offer, most of them deliver for free to your door, but as above, shopping local isn’t just about food, keep following the Garforth Live board to see what else there is. #besurprised
If you are a fan of using The Main Deal, fabulous, I really do thank you. But would you kindly do me a favour, please would you leave a review, it helps really everyone. http://www.themaindeal.co.uk/reviews.html
I had a great meeting with Paul from West & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce a week ago, he has asked if i would help out in their Government scheme, Start&Grow, which helps startups to flourish. They have a great way of helping people who want to get a new business of the ground, and he has asked if I can help from a local aspect with social media training. This scheme is here to help and is free if you fulfil the criteria that is required, which to be fair, would cover many start ups – if you want to hear more about it, please don’t hesitate to contact me and I will put you in touch with them. I’m looking forward to hearing from AB Painters and Decorators this week
#WOTS(word on the street)
Did you check out theirs weeks SHOUT OUT, Dorothy Anne’s? Some good news coming to their shop this summer – as a parent it’s going to be such a great thing. Check it out
Wetherspoons has been topic of conversation again over these last few weeks, ‘is it coming is it not’ are on the lips of many locals - here what I read on Streetlife;
J D Wetherspoons are still working with the local authority to gain planning permission for the development, so unfortunately there are no confirmed dates as yet for going onsite, or opening.
talking of drinking establishments, there have been rumours over the last few weeks about a new ‘sophisticated wine bar’ opening up on Main Street, and as of yesterday, there is now a social media accounts, for Vogue Bar Garforth, they are not the finished article yet or near completion, but I am meeting the owner, Robert on Monday to find out more of the details
So Razers old shop is soon to be a new Beauty salon, called Opium Beauty, I spoke to the Manager last week on Twitter and they are planning to open on 30th April. I don’t know as yet what they are going to offer differently than what our current beauticians do, but I will try and find why they are moving into a market I feel we all think, is saturated.
As some of you will know Essentials at the top of Main Street left in January and a new beauticians has taken over with something, a little different. There new name is Chocolate Beauty Spa, Garforth – and as this moment in time, they are recruiting:
We are looking for Level 3 Beauty Therapists / Nail Technicians / Make up Artists with min 1yrs salon experience to join our team!
Full Time / Part Time positions available
Candidates must be:
Able to work using own initiative
Have a strong work ethic
Must possess excellent customer service skills and be able to work within a team
CV's should be sent to email@example.com
Great news to hear about another eatery opening in August. The new Cafe will be called, The Station House Cafe and will be located on Garforth Train Station. They have plans to open in 3 phases and they are all very exciting. I’m popping in to meet with the owner next week whilst she’s there stripping.....WALLS, people, walls! I’m looking forward to hearing more about it. For now, this is their first phase
Phase 1 - is the take-away service, which will be served from the serving hatch facing the platform. Opening hours will be 6-11am, Mon-Fri to start with. Mainly hot breakfast sandwiches, but also hot and cold drinks, including speciality Italian coffees, and a small range of Italian sweet pastries. For those commuters not wanting breakfast so early, they can grab a coffee on the go, plus pick up something to take into work for their lunches, such as sandwiches or boxed salads.
Strikes new Garden Centre is going up quick, not sure what the big round cylinders are in the front, I’m gathering they’re to hold water?
A new restaurant too! I look forward to it opening in autumn. I hope they’re going to invite the Garforth Lions Santa back? And sadly no, the train has never been found!
So what’s all this malarkey about meetings not going ahead if Councillor Dobson is in attendance over the NHS Garforth Clinic tomorrow?
I believe Mark is on Made in Leeds tonight talking about it – see what he has to say on the matter ahead of tomorrow’s meeting at the Welfare hall; if it goes ahead?! On The Aire 6pm and 9pm SKY 117 or Freeview channel 7
A tweet came in this week about Junction 47 and the developers, Wilton Developments.
WILTON DEVELOPMENTS has revealed its intention to bring forward a major scheme in Leeds after acquiring a 75-acre site.
Purchasing on behalf of Water Lane, Wilton said the site at Junction 47 of the M1 at Garforth has permission to deliver a large scale development and is “potentially significantly important to the growth and development of the wider East Leeds area.”
Jason Stowe, managing director of Wilton Developments, said: “We have appointed Nathaniel Lichfield and Partners to advise us on the various planning options for the site, it is our intention to bring forward a quality scheme for the area.
"Wilton has a strong track record of bringing sites forward for development and we look forward to working closely with Leeds City Council and other stakeholders to achieve this aim.”
The Leeds office of CBRE has been retained to provide real estate advice to Wilton on the site.
On asking Mark Dobson if he knew of their plans, he wasn’t sure as this area has been down for development for some time, as we all know the former Prison idea, glad that got squashed!, So it was only a matter of time before someone was going to build on it. Wilton’s will still have to apply for planning with LCC. Let’s hope it’s something good and not something that will dappen out our high street! I’ll keep my eye on the public access page
Be seen to be local and shout out about it, you can help by just simply sharing where you have been; recommend it on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or snapchat
Until next week.......
Draw a picture of a bird day – have you been sending yours in? #notgreatatdrawing
It’s always fun when the children are off school, juggling work and entertainment and spending quality time with them too, which is my whole point of doing this job in order I can fit it round the family. But I’m thinking I may need to start looking for a person to help fill the position of holiday cover #anyoneinterested?
Garforth Traders Association - This month after 2 year of establishing the association into more of an organised team, I hand my notice in as Chair - the group is great with meetings every 6 weeks and it's now time for someone on Main Street to take it on board and move forward with it, I will miss the fun side of the meetings; always up for a laugh are the traders
Yorkshire Choice Awards evening
It was a fabulous night, from the pictures you can see, but unfortunately none of our lovely businesses came away with an award, one of the winning businesses had 18,000 votes... that’s a huge number to ask and beat . However, forever the optimist, West Yorkshire did win best business region
Can you see my disguise?
Cielo, Dumouchel, Angels and Butterflies, Precious Bridal, Business Works UK and Ian’s Mobile Farm in Aberford
Well, you know I said last week, I was worried about the evening festivities finishing at 1.00am.... and that you might find me in a corner asleep.... #lateforme well, I was one of the last ones there..... lasting longer in my old age!
Lots of social media posts over the last week in the run up to the local elections, always good fun seeing one councillor having a go at the other local councillor ... #localbanter #electiontime
GARFORTH ARTS FESTIVAL
Well what a great meeting was had, there are approximately 13 of us from the community and all walks of Garforth from Business owners, to Teachers, organisers, people from our church and social activity groups as well as good hearted people who want to do something this year whilst the big play ground party takes a break; they’ve assured is they’ll be back in 2017. Now we have some dates and this great group will be meeting every two weeks to discuss our plans - lots of great ideas and possibilities coming forward, #watchthisspace it could get very exciting!
Garforth Christmas Committee
After last month’s Meeting, all seems with the team and Events from LCC, all ideas seem to be ok and at least not frowned upon. Debbie from Angels and Butterflies has a great plan and list for this year’s Market and hopefully it means it will extend to the Sunday too. – Lots to do, lots to plan. We’re hoping to get more local musicians and foodies on board this year.
There was lots of interest after Monday’s Facebook post which I was asked to share quite quickly due to its nature. Normally, and as on a previous post not so long ago, I waited for clarification from the police. But I knew this was from a trusted source and felt it was important for people to know – at 1,006 shares and 31,000 reaches, I’m now confident a lot of people are more aware, I do ask if you hear or see anything you know does not seem right, do not approach this person, please inform the local police as they will have designated incident number assigned to this
Police out looking now - just to be aware (asked to be shared by a Garforth resident)
WARNING: 45 MINS AGO..My 12 yr old son was followed by a strange man to our front door on Scholars Gate in Garforth. He asked him to go with him as he has some sweets at his house. Thank god my son ran in and locked the door. The man is tall in his 50s wearing a woolly beanie hat. He has a bushy grey beard and was walking a small white Scottie dog. The police are out looking for him now. PLEASE SHARE!!
It’s a pity I don’t get these figures when I shout out about great local things from great businesses
Rumours about closure of shops
There are always rumours about closing of shops and sadly these rumours seemed to stem from other local businesses, this can have quite an impact on these businesses, so it’s a bit unfair. So to put things right and to share facts I know. Cielo, Dorothy Anne’s or Scott Hairdressers are NOT LEAVING OR MOVING. However, we look to see Ladycares moving out by the end of the year, this is also fact as Karen the owner has confirmed and has been telling her customers - you should #shoplocal because when you don't they go
FOR YOUR DIARY – Augustus Court, Meridian Care Home will be having an open Day on Saturday 23rd April, you will be able to go along and see this wonderful place and also listen to Garforth Community Choir sing as well as one of the local dance and theatre schools perform – I will create an event for this very soon.
Who did you fool this morning? There was great one being tweeted about by a local resident on how this fabulous train picked her up from Garforth station and took her into Leeds this morning #ifonly
Did you all have a great Easter? If like a lot of you, the 4 days off and then kids back into school have been a killer! I was getting all nice and relaxed and then Tuesday it was like a shock to the system having to get ready for school again; even the teachers looked stunned to be back #semirelaxed
If you’re lucky to be going away this school holiday, have a fabulous time and please bring back some sun

#WOTS (Word On The Street)
After a meeting last week, it has come to light that due to a number of reasons, Garforth Arts Festival, Party in the Playground WILL NOT be going on this at Garforth Academy this year. But it will be looking to return in 2017, this is what the organisers have said, please note a community meeting on Monday at The Gaping Goose
The Playground Party event will be rested in 2016. Garforth Academy is focusing attention on a school production this year instead.
· The Garforth Arts Festival needs to have stronger community involvement.
· Systems are in place for involving the schools but the community involvement now needs to develop further.
· The festival would like to see more events organised by community volunteers and organisations.
· For 2016 - we are looking for people to suggest ideas for small scale community projects.
· These will take place in July as part of the Garforth Arts Festival.
· We would also like to see a series of events throughout the year under the banner of the festival.
· In 2017 we intend to return to the Playground Party. However, we would still like the community element of the festival to grow and develop.
· A group of people are meeting on Monday 4th April at 7pm in the Gaping Goose. This is an open meeting - all welcome
If you would like to put forward any proposals for possible events, or suggest ways you can help develop the community aspect of Garforth Arts Festival, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
The #BIGWORD on the street has been....
Pride and Produce as they officially opened their doors yesterday, Thursday, but tomorrow will see their BIG DAY opening to all, there will be tasters being shared about, so you will get to taste some of their great menu - I recommend the peanut square.... OMG.... so yummy. Their warm flapjack has already created a storm on social media, being described as #orgasmic! Definitely worth a try or a re-visit. Check out their full menu on their website www.pride-produce.co.uk and great to see this company adding to the already wonderful places to eat on Main Street, don’t forget our other great independent places to grab great food
The Good Food Store
Freshly Made – Aberford Road
Maria’s Baps – Isabella Road
Martin House will be moving into the little shop that used to be St Gemma’s Bridal wear (aka the old Ladycares) one of our great local businesses asked me about it, as they were keen to see if it was feasible to move their business in there, but Martin House had got in there before us, a shame really
NO IT’S NOT A NEW JEWELLERS BY STEFAN.........#oldsign
Genix Dentist look to be getting on with the extension of their business as workmen are in building what looks like new areas and separate rooms, looking at the plans, Genix will be keeping upstairs as well as developing below #bigdentist
A popular post last night about, The Mansion or as they have it worded it, one of Leeds Grandest Homes! It’s a property that many of us have wondered about and now it’s up for sale - £2.7 million, I think I need a fair few members yet to buy this! 8,908 have looked at my post thus far #garforthnosey - check out the link from rightmove
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-58570877.html - the question is, why are they selling it’s a beautiful home?
Joan’s has now departed and the shop is temporarily empty #newssoon on who’s moving in
The Chinese Takeaway has also moved to Barley Hill Road, leaving a shop empty, I have tried to get in touch with the landlords as someone has asked about the empty property, but unfortunately more digging is required as the hoarding that is up, has details that are out of date, it seems the company doesn’t exist! #helpful
Church Lane have some works on Sunday, so please note the road will be shut with diversions around Bar Lane and Selby Road – Initially, after reading, I got excited, was something actually from my email last month was going to happen, but it seems it’s just maintenance! #liveinhope
