Bank holiday weekend and half term – May the sun shine; well it is national Sun Screen Day!
I hope when you put on sunscreen, you smile as you bought it much cheaper at Ladycares!
I hope you liked last week’s Guest Blog? Phil Barrett is a great local guy with great enthusiasm for the shop local brand and about the place he lives. Some great comments came in.
I am hoping to run a Guest Blog every couple of weeks, so if you want to be one of our blog writers and have your say on the place we live, then please do so and send details to me at Christine@themaindeal.co.uk

Good Luck tomorrow to Garforth Community Youth Choir who will be singing their first performance this at the Welfare Hall for all parents and family. I hear they have learnt some great songs over the last month or so and could chitty chitty bang their way out of the welfare hall with all their lovely singing.
The Youth Choir is completely separate entity from the Garforth Community Choir, it has been taken under by Maggie Hargreaves and Kieran, their choir leader who has worked with young choirs in the past. – check out their poster of information - let's get Garforth singing
However if you’re still interested in joining the adult, Garforth Community Choir - here’s the video to give you an insight of how much fun they have and what type of things they sing #allsorts - and this not even the full choir!
Changing perceptions is always a hard thing to do, however, I do like a challenge! This week I found myself on threads of conversations on other social media sites; not something I do often as sometimes it can be people hiding behind tablets and saying whatever they like, generally about what we don't have and how more variety on Garforth would be better and what we need and what we don't need and as usual I find myself, doing my job; changing those perceptions and giving them facts... It's great to have an opinion and it's great to want something, however ..........
Shop local with the things that are here now and more of what you want want will come, how about finding a business to fill in one or two of the very few empty shops we do have! #justathought
Be the change you want it to be by being proactive not whining
I hope you all have a great Bank Holiday weekend and if you’re off with the children this week, don’t forget about the local things that are going on. Lotherton Hall has a Fairy Tale, trail on from Saturday 28th.
Don’t forget about Garforth Golf Range, no membership needed, just pay for a basket of balls and whack a few of them out to the beautiful surroundings then stop in their cafe for snacks too – find the young golfer in your child
Sweetshakes is always fun on holidays, always a great atmosphere along with some great milkshakes and one of favourites too – keep following their social media pages for offers
Genix' new development should be open soon, they have been busy, it was due to open at the end of this month, but looks to me there is stil a fair bit to do yet - hard at it
Nothing moving on planning as yet, with regards to Lidl etc
An no news on Joan’s old shop yet either – Landlords won’t even send me a hint!
Have fun all the young adults at PROM NIGHT tonight - make some memories
Until Next time........................
An Idea that was sent through a couple of weeks ago; let's have a guest blogger! Great, let us see what a local resident has to say about where we live, shop, eat and play......
So…thank you to Christine for letting me post the first of many (I hope) guest bloggers to the site. I’m Phil Barrett, local resident, husband to Jen, and father to 18 month old Ben. I’ve been asking myself why I offered to write a blog; and aside from really believing in what Christine is doing, I guess I just wanted to gage the opinions of my fellow Garforth-folk to see if my own thoughts about where we live resonate with anyone else, otherwise I may sound like a total rambling narcissist.
It was whilst recently renewing the home insurance that I realised I have been a proud resident of Garforth for 10 years now. (I wonder if I’m now considered ‘a local’!). A lot has happened in those 10 years for me and my family and it’s good to call Garforth ‘home’. It’s the little things I like in Garforth like how people still say ‘Hi’, ‘Morning’ and the classic smile and nod from a friendly stranger, but as a small town, it feels a safe and friendly place to live with much to offer. But, and this could be a big ‘but’, I still feel that Garforth has so much more potential….
As a town, city and country, we’ve all gone through a fairly long drawn-out recession over the last few years with both businesses and people being put through the mill. I think Garforth has, on the whole or on the face of it, faired rather well. We’ve had businesses swim against the tide (can anyone remember Dorothy Ann’s or Pease’s not being there?), we’ve had several newcomers flourish (Cielo, The Green Grocer, Sweetshakes to name a few) which in turn, I suspect, has shown the potential for other new small businesses like Pride and Produce, Quirky Ales and the soon-to-be-opened ‘The Station House’. Long may this continue.
There are many positives when I think about Garforth, some great Primary schools, an excellent Secondary school, good train and motorway networks, good shops and good people, but for me though, it feels like Garforth is at, or at least nearing, a bit of a crossroads. It can either drift, and we can hope it continues to improve, or the residents of Garforth, I reckon, could make it go from strength to strength.
There are some great people around us like Cllr Dobson and of course Christine of the Main Deal who are passionate about Garforth and go out of their way to bring about change, but do we take these people and our local businesses for granted?
I know a lot of people with opinions about Garforth and regularly eavesdrop on the odd murmurings whilst pushing Ben on the swings at the local park, but I do sometimes wonder whether the people of Garforth are really that bothered about how our town will be in, say, 10 years time. Do people really care? For example, in the barbers, pubs, shops and more vocally online (I really need to curb the eavesdropping) I’ve often heard people complain about the number of hair and beauty businesses and charity shops we have. Whilst I do have some concerns, pragmatically I’ve also seen a lot of ghost-town Main Streets and I love to see how busy ours is. Plus, those businesses don’t start on a whim; a lot of painstaking research and due diligence is undertaken when, ultimately, necks are on the line.
So rather than complain about things after the horse has bolted (as I do), I feel we need to be more proactive. Simply put, what businesses do WE, the actual residents of Garforth, want to see set up and help succeed? Let’s give would-be or existing entrepreneurs a clear direction and open arms on what we DO want, surely that’s the best kind of research? And so, I am offering up the metaphorical microphone to you… what would you like to welcome to our Main Street?
Thanks, Phil, a very fabulous insight to what community is thinking - if you do have any comments to this week's, Guest BLogger, please do add yours and if you want to become one of our guest bloggers, please do email me : email@example.com
Until next week...........
STOP TEXTING WHILST DRIVING - KEEP GARFORTH AND IT'S PEOPLE SAFE
Where Does it come from?
The superstition surrounding this day may have arisen in the Middle Ages, "originating from the story of Jesus' last supper and crucifixion" in which there were 13 individuals present in the Upper Room on the 13th of Nisan Maundy Thursday, the night before his death on Good Friday. While there is evidence of both Friday and the number 13 being considered unlucky, there is no record of the two items being referred to as especially unlucky in conjunction before the 19th century.
Are you superstitious or just unlucky?
YEAH... SATS are over – what a week it has been, more so in the media, and all these leaks! That’s probably caused more hassle and stress than anything else. Our Local primary schools have given the impression of calm, collective, organised and a chilled attitude towards it all; our school had bacon sandwiches as the start of each day!
This week we welcome RAW Family Design as a new member, very much a family affair, local company who who are a Specialist clothing embroiderer and printer and a supplier of workwear, sportswear and social ‘uniform’ - great if you have your own company and need clothing embroidered
Check them out on social media
#WOTS (words on the street)
Lots of local jobs popping up this week, keep an eye on the GARFORTH LIVE BOARD as I share all agency jobs coming through on twitter as well as local jobs in the area
Pride and Produce are looking for Sunday staff, Vogue Bar are looking for bar staff and The Gascoigne are also looking for a cleaner

This Week a Garforth in Bloom bag bought at Dorothy Anne's travelled all the way to Lake Erie in Pennsylvania!
Garforth in Bloom are asking, if you've bought a GIB bag, they would love it if you could take a photo of it on your holidays with location in the shot; they want to make an album #travellingbaglady!
Like this one, send it to @GarforthinBloom or on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/36364579376/ or Email them your pictures by contacting them here http://www.garforthinbloom.org.uk/
Tomorrow at the Welfare Hall will be the RNLI Annual plant sale from 10am until 12pm - go and support it and buy some good plants and what you can't get there, try Sunday at Firthfields Community Centre where they too are having a plant sale provided by their gardening Club 10.00am until 1.00pm
Garforth Musical Society have enjoyed their performance this week - When the Lights go on again, every tonight and tomorrow evening are their last performances, at The Welfare Hall, so go and see something local, and then stop off at the pub after #justlikeintheolddays
Still no sign up on the new chicken shop! I do hope they pick one of my from last week's blog! ;)
Opium Beauty had a great opening and finally revealed their new shop, very sparkly and blingy - I hope some of you managed to get a glass of Prosecco?
There are no new plans in place, which also makes me think that if the rumour of Joan's old shop was to be a Dominoes, then planning permission would need to be requested to change it's use! #nopizza
Next week we are going to have an addition to the Blog, a guest blogger - each week we will try and have a local resident coming on and having their say about Garforth, telling you information what they know and and perhaps stories of interest #readthisspace next week, you may even know them #communityonboard
It’s eurovision weekend, will we win.... erm, unlikely but support it anyway, it's always fun. In theory this could be our last one we enter should the UK pull out of Europe in June! Are you having a PARTAAAYYY? - tweet us your pictures if you are @garforthtoday #garfortheurovision
The customer service is really good in our local shops and very friendly too, because they appreciate your business..... they really, really do
Until next week............
Well, now you're talking, with the sun out, it would be rude not to participate in this National day.... Oh, it's not just about alcoholic beverages? #ahwell
Beverages have existed, in one form or another, almost since the beginning of mankind. Of course, people had to drink something, so before there was Coca-Cola there was water, simple as that. However, as the millennia went by, people began to create new and interesting types of beverages. Today, beverages are divided into at least 19 categories, including alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, caffeinated beverages, barley-based beverages, maize beverages, rice drinks and so on. The first recorded beers were made in ancient Egypt, where it was so weak that even children drank it. However, it is suspected that beer could date back to the Neolithic period. The world’s first coffee as we know it today is thought to have been made by a Yemeni named Omar in the 16th century. Coca-Cola, on the other hand, was created relatively recently, in the late 19th century. Few among us can imagine our lives without at least on of these three beverages in it, which just goes to show how very important beverages are in our culture, and have been, for hundreds and thousands of years.
This week has been about fitting everything into 3 days this week with Bank Holiday Monday and boys being off school due to their school being used for voting, but hey, let's not make the, Voting-and-children-being-away-from-their education-an-extra-day, political! #justsayin
So the BIG BANG on Monday in Garforth (so we all initially thought, it was just Garforth)
I don't know what was more scary, the two big blasts or seeing most of my neighbours in their bedroom attire out in the street! If anything, it brought community together; even if it was reported some people were running up and down the street bewildered by what had happened. I make a request, can people come out again on, New Years Eve please #AuldlangSyne.... minus the PJ's #notnaked!
If anything, it certainly gave us a fright and something to talk about the next day, and also an educational talk in school to children about the explanation of what a sonic boom is! Don't want to hear one again for a while though....!
We welcome 3 new members to The Main Deal this week
Tory Jane Beauty - http://www.toryjanebeauty.com/
Garforth Tigers ARL - http://www.garforthtigers.com/
All Protection Roofing and Building Services - I've used these guys and would recommend them
La Bella Vita Released their new Website this week, check it out http://www.la-bella-vita.co.uk/ courtesy of LS25 Webdesign and the lovely Matt Gibbons #usinglocal
Main Street Festival - off for a meeting with the Garforth Arts Festival and some great local volunteers tonight to talk about where we are at with the Street Festival which will take place on the 2nd July - some great live performances and fun things happening, I may be able to release some more information later in the week after tonights meeting #watchthisspace
The Station House Cafe are now up and running on Facebook and Twitter as well as Instagram - I had a lovely Saturday morning training Jo Baranelli, but the best of all was I was served a 2 cheese and Salami Bread and a Red Wine Cheese cake with several cups of tea all served in/on vintage crockery... I was in heaven. Can't all my Training sessions be like this? Lots of great things to come from Station House, so keep up date with them on Social Media.
#WOTS (word on the street)
Check out this weekends weather forecast - #vitaminDishere
Opium Beauty open their doors on Saturday, where Razers Hairdressers used to be, Becky and her team are not new to Garforth, they all used to work together up at Essentials before they closed, They they have just brought their clients and skills further down the street
Pop along in the afternoon, say hello to the team, I hear they have something called a Prosecco van to help with their opening day
Rumour has it - Vogue bar is to be a brothel mid week..... This has to be as funny as the person who put up the advert in one of the windows some time ago about their being an adult shop soon opening! As usual it is a rumour, the owners of Vogue are aware of. As mentioned in previous posts, Vogue Bar is just a bar, it's not something massive, it won't be making too much noise and the space their opening up in, isn't massive either, so just wait and see before making judgement
We want to encourage what comes to Garforth, and the fact we have something new and different, we should be excited.
More Rumours about Wetherspoons Pulling out again, there is nothing to say they have pulled out and I have confirmation from a good source that nothing has changed... be patient, when all the hurdles have been jumped then they'll have it up and running in no time. Garforth is not the only new Wetherspoons to be happening across the UK
So Labour is in again for Garforth and Swillington Ward, fair play to Sarah Field, she certainly walked her campaign were I only saw a tweet from Conservatives whilst eating breakfast in Pauls... oh Sorry Paula's! Whoever you voted, we can only hope the party, do Good for Garforth
You may have seen our Garforth in Bloomers out in force this week with planting new flowers and planting a lovely Rowan tree which was donated. I believe they were moaned at for planting it and were asked in what I believe, a rude manner, who gave them permission to plant it (LCC council did as part of an ongoing regeneration scheme on LCC land)
It's good to know most of us are extremely supportive of what Garforth in Bloom do to make Garforth look beautiful..... But like I always say, 'I'm not a bottle of wine, I can't please everyone' #beverageday
Nothing in planning this week, lots of things still in for consideration
Good Luck to all year 6 children in all of our Garforth Primary Schools next week for their SATS TESTS
By shopping local you're looking after our local economy, look at all the great local jobs that have been coming up on the Garforth Live board over the last few weeks!
Until next week........
My name is Christine Thom, I came to live in Garforth 20 years ago; you may have seen me around ?
