Happy ‘National Beauticians Day

http://nationaldaycalendar.com/days-2/national-beauticians-day-june-26/

We have 9 wonderful beauticians on the website, and they’re all individual talented and creative

It’s been a very random week this week, talking to pubs about pie & peas, Pom Pom Making in the pub, collecting raffle prizes for Sundays Gala... Talking to people about Street Art, picking bedroom carpet; yes there is a life I have that fits in there somewhere.

One of our great local First Responders has been very active and trying to get a petition together for traffic lights on Selby Road, especially after this week accident.  Please do read and sign the petition, I am hearing what Lucie is saying and she is right, we need more care and attention on this road

https://www.change.org/p/highways-agency-leeds-city-council-please-add-traffic-lights-and-a-pedestrian-crossing-to-the-junction-between-a63-selby-road-garforth-and-leeds-road-kippax?recruiter=328678489&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=share_twitter_responsive

I was due to hold our second Garforth Hour on Tuesday the 30th but unfortunately, our host venue has had to pull out.  Due to the short notice, I will be looking at a new venue for the next couple of weeks and will shout out about it once it’s organised.  I’m hoping Nicky Busby our volunteer photographer who was attending will still be able to attend our re-scheduled one, a great local photographer who does some great things in and around Yorkshire

Garforth Arts Festival

Starts on Monday, 29th through to 11th July – get your tickets for live events here

http://www.garforthartsfestival.co.uk/

Nisa (neesa.....Nicer) not sure how it’s pronounced.  Will soon be opening its doors, and if you have a look at the Banner, there is an email address to contact for local jobs; which is always a good thing.  The earlier post I put up on Facebook this week about it opening received lots of positive responses and a few not so, pleasant commentaries, but I dealt with this and they were blocked straight away.  This is positive page; we will have none of that ‘I’ll sit behind my computer and say whatever I like’ material thank you very much.  Anyway, the question on people’s minds is whether we need another convenience store?  Perhaps it will be good for the shops on the parade, they really need to see more footfall.  It will look astatically better; the glasswork all around will look very smart on the entrance to Main Street.  I suspect it will also be good

Anyhow,... it was sad to see Scott bakers have no more ... another empty shop and a loss of a lovely business that so many locals went to and met at... cakes were great too.  I will keep my eye out on Leeds Planning Page to see if anything comes in

Demolition of Miami (proposed new Food Store)

After the meeting held on Wednesday with KUC Ltd the holding company for RBS, local councillors, council and businesses; and the traders had some great support from one of our local businesses putting forward a great case for his business and the impact it will have on other local business, but unfortunately his voice was not heard, neither as it seems, where the objections and concerns from any of the traders on Main Street.  I sit on the fence on this one a little, I do think we need a better supermarket, but I don’t think we need two.  I do think it’s great that it will create more jobs, but I don’t think they will be able to sort out the traffic problems that it will occur, no matter what they plan to do with the Road.  KUC did a survey some time ago, they asked 1,000 people (a bit like family fortunes) where they shopped, 23% shopped in Tesco, 11% shopped on Main Street meaning 56% shopped elsewhere, meaning to them, there was a clear need for a new supermarket, but what they probably haven’t thought about is, if Tesco’s drop to 22% it’s not going to be a big deal, if one of our high street shops drops to 10% it is A BIG DEAL.

I naturally worry for our high street, businesses are struggling already, and now we’re going to bring in a new supermarket based on one of the factors of 1,000 people research,   I just hope I can get in there and get one of the two companies now on the list that are wanting to buy; and NO it’s definitely not TESCO’s moving.  To see if I can persuade them to help, work with the local shops in order Main Street has future.

Asbestos services have been in Libby’s aka Wetherspoons   so there is some progress happening.... who will be in next week?

If you want to hold conversations with people or find out about things locally, join Street Life, it’s quite good.  You can talk to local people and find out about things you may not know.  It’s there to encourage people to make connections in their community.

This week we've had 24,000 hits to the website, and now have a very active Facebook site with 819 followers, to get to 1,000 would be wonderful.  You can help by telling friends and family to use The Main Deal first, for shopping. – keep it local and support your town.

Garforth Lions Sunday GALA – I will be there with the lovely ladies from Globe not for profit; we will have a fabulous Tombola with great gifts from our local businesses and plenty of great things for the children too. I will also be bringing POM POM kits so you can contribute towards to the Garforth Arts Festival and Main Street too.  The Pom Pom Pub fest went fairly well with several of us making Pom Poms with wine; well not Pom Poms out of wine.  I think someone took a picture of one of my great creations before and after wine..... oops
All monies raised on The Main Deal stall on Sunday  will be going to Globe, which is the charity, The Main Deal is supporting .  Come down, rain or shine, support the good that goes on in our town

Lots going on this week, busy, busy, busy.  Talking to a potential venue who are keen an interested in letting us use them for setting up the  Garforth Community Choir, will be able to finalise this part on Monday evening.  In the meantime, I have people on the case searching for a choir master/help

I have also been organising and picking up advertising leaflets and gifts for the Garforth Gala tombola; it’s always great to see The Main Deal members and they have been extremely generous with their prizes.  I have also been marketing with something fun this week, only managed a few, but if you see one, please take a picture and put it on the Facebook page. ‘Take what?’ I hear you say;  you’ll know when you see one.

I have also had some great review meetings, Dorothy Anne’s, great shop, great people and wonderful brands and staying on as a member; encouraging footfall is only a good thing

The great vintage wedding dress that even Hong Kong have heard about, auction has finished today, after a fair few people retracted their bids, the dress still sold for an amazing £2,910.00 .... Fantastic money to a wonderful cause donated by a lovely man.

Well done Sam at Adore Antiques for hosting a wonderful charitable Vintage Tea Party last Saturday and raising a fair amount of money for a charity close to her own heart, The tea and sandwiches in a beautiful setting went down very well – something we need more of me thinks!

Some information floating about this week about the proposed new supermarket!  - Worth while attending if you’re  interested in the next possible stage, please read the following;

Some unnecessary people in the world
I was disgusted to hear this week after the great efforts of Garforth in Bloom planting new flowers at the Garforth stone near the Cedar Ridge Estate, that some unnecessary people had been and taken them....  really, and the need is?!

I attended the Outer East Leeds Community Environmental discussion at Temple Newsam this week #nicesarnies with some of the great people that help make Garforth what it is, people from Garforth in Bloom, Flood Group, Councillors, Council Workers, and Garforth Lions.  You can see I’m in full swing here; as if my talking isn’t enough, my hands always have to join in!

Picture
It was a really interesting meeting about how as traders and community can come together to help make our the place we live and it’s environment a better place by doing simple things and not always leaving it up to the people we think have the money and power to do it.  The Council have had massive cuts as we all know, but are still working out ways we could PUL together PICK UP LITTER and save the current £250k a year being spent in Leeds to remove litter, dog poop etc.  We had a great discussion on our ward table and come up with a few pilot scheme ideas that could work alongside the good work our councillors have put in place with the dog poop Volunteers campaign, and lots of ideas could work well and possible save money #education #visuals #responsibility

Safe Streets for children to play
Myself and another resident on my own Road have been out this week visiting our local neighbours seeing if they will back the Safe Play day on our street.  One Sunday, every month for 3 hours.  Only the children of our street, being able to play out in a safe supervised environment – We met some lovely neighbours and it was nice to meet the ones we didn’t know, some have them have been on our road for 50+ years when Wimpey first came to build, they’re part of the road – We still have more to visit, but so far, we’ve had a majority in favour and only a few objections #fairenough – we’ll see how we get on with the application.

Several streets in Garforth have already been successful, you can be too http://www.leeds.gov.uk/residents/Pages/Play-Streets.aspx

POM POM PUBFEST – Wednesday 24th June ay 8pm

I have organised the little room with the lovely accommodating Jackie from The Podger to let us have this space, keeping the wool away from the other punters.  This has been arranged in order to help the huge Pom Pom Bomb for Garforth Arts Festival and the Traders in Main Street taking part, this is so we can help the wonderful ladies who have grabbed this by the horns Debbie Kirby and Debbie Todd.  If you can make it, please do come along, I will be there with my wool, pom pom maker and maybe even a cheeky glass of Vino!

Peanut Butter Cookies
Here’s a recipe - http://uktv.co.uk/food/recipe/aid/514474

This evening, I'm off to the place I once called home; well  the Wirral is close to Liverpool.  I will be spending some quality time with my best friend and our other pals, Eat and Drink.  But as always, I will look forward to coming back to my now, home town, where I can understand the lingo! I've been away from Scouseland for far too long, the accent has changed

It’s been a fairly quiet week this week, with  two great reviews, one with Jackie at The Podger and one with Tony From TC First Aid Training, both great people with great jobs, I suppose if you have too many beers, it’s always good to know First Aid #notcondoning.

I also met with a guy called Tony Sylvester who’s new to Garforth moving from Middlesbrough, he’s started his own business and specialist in creative ideas, Graphics, Branding & Website design, SEO and online marketing communications. HTML/CSS/PHP/XHTML. Need a creative?  Get in touch.

Garforth Hour – has grown a lot since November, as more local businesses hear about it, more connections are made.  Garforth in Bloom alone have had several new sponsors which I’m really chuffed about, we need you to support the great things.  Being on Garforth Hour every Tuesday evening shows you the great things that are local, and it such a short time 1 hour from 8pm.  You can see, even as a local resident what’s going on in Garforth and businesses on our doorstep, see who's joining in the networking and having great interaction and banter.  Our next Live night is at The Bird in Hand on Tuesday 30th June at 8pm.  Don’t worry, you’re not standing about tweeting for a few hours, you actually get to meet the people you've been tweeting with  - So if you're a local business, please register for your free attendance to this great night.

Word on the Street

Do you know you can apply for temporary closure of your Street for free, through Leeds City Council?  Organise it with your neighbours, it’s here to bring back to good old days of allowing your children to play safely on the Street you live...  and, you get to talk and meet the neighbours you might not know.  Bring back the times when your children knew everybody on the Street and you knew who the helpful neighbour were up the Road!  - We've applied in our Street

http://www.leeds.gov.uk/residents/Pages/Play-Streets.aspx - click on this link to find out more

Garforth in Bloom Fair is on tomorrow, make sure you support the good of our town, spend a pound or 2 and half an hour of your time to the volunteers who keep our town pretty all year round.  You can also find out how you can help, whether it’s physically donating some of your time or donating as little as £5 a year to be a member – every little helps

This week I have been walking round Garforth; doing some fun marketing (did I say it’s been quiet this week!) Have you seen them? Have you spotted them?  They're on our Streets and in places where people will see whilst perhaps waiting around or walking by, if you see one, take a photo and send it to me of you, putting it back!   .....  Just a few Cluesess #keithlemon

If you're wanting to take your children somewhere local, think of Garforth Golf Range, they do some great deals.  My Son and Brother go and have a great time thwacking the balls down the green, undercover too if the weather turns rubbish this weekend!!!  How dare it.

4th June - Happy 'National Fish & Chip' Day

5/6/2015

So, who is up for a, ‘Chippy Tea’ tonight?  Support our local ones, Hilltons, East Garforth, and Central Fisheries on Main Street.

On behalf of the Traders Association, I have been up and down Main Street this week, knocking on doors of shops and speaking to the people that either love me or loathe me; luckily there’s only a few that aren't sure about my enthusiasm – so I hear!  You can't win em all.  I've been chasing up to see who would like a Christmas tree on the outside of their shop.  ‘What,’ I hear you shout, ‘But it’s only June’ but as you will appreciate, the 21 Christmas trees that have had the nod already, it takes time to quote, check each shop out and put up a bracket and waterproof cabling,  it’s best to do it  when the weather is on side.  This is all thanks to your help in the Fiveraffle the Garforth traders held last year and the money raised as The Traders said is going back in the Street!  Luckily I have also found a fabulous local electrician called Phillip Taylor from Newtech Integration Ltd who is helping us out with the electrics and brackets

A few more enquiries this week about new businesses coming on board, the delay sometimes is often due to the information they need to send me to put up on the website.

This week I put up a post as I have done before, about putting together a Garforth Community Choir.  A local lady who is also keen to help and be involved inspired me to as the question again, thanks Maggie Hargreaves,  I did and the response was huge.   The Main Deal can help in lots of ways.  With having a fair knowledge of places, local business and people, things like this can be achieved easier.  The post asked if anyone was interested and 'by eck', it certainly showed you are.  The post reached 7,000 timelines, which then gave me the green light to start looking further into it.  So far,  I have asked a couple of venues, thinking about days, and asking help from a people in the know of how to set up such a thing.  So far, 19 people have put their names forward; it all has to start somewhere, and this has been a great start so far.  I will keep you posted with how it progresses over the next few months.

Word on the Street

As you know, I try and keep my ear to the ground and spread my eyes wide open to see and hear if there is anything relevant going on, and as always, little things pop up during each week.  However this maybe a big thing that pops up if all goes ahead

Brecks Farm have put planning permission in for 1 x 48 metre Wind Turbine which will be erected adjunct to the farm buildings, not too sure if this will affect anyone’s view; unless you live in the houses on Selby Road that face the farm!

Here is the information if you want to have a look at the plans https://publicaccess.leeds.gov.uk/online-applications/simpleSearchResults.do?action=firstPage

I think a fair few comments have gone about a possible parking issue with Mr Wether and Mr Spoons proposals for 2 beer gardens and no parking facilities, hence it's still in as, planning consideration

My plaque is now up on a tub outside the Welfare Hall...  Just glad that now I have donated to a barrel we’ll see more lovely flowers planted. #maketheplacepretty

I have listened to the first premix version of the Jingle this week; it’s really starting to sound great. Thanks Daydreamer, Tim Manion
