I can’t believe on Sunday we will be in July! As much as the weather is shouting summer, this year is going far too quickly, and now we’re on countdown to the Feastival
Check out the Facebook page (@Garfeast) and keep up to date with all that’s going on and coming along on the day, we just have to pray we can hold onto this sunshine as it would make for a fantastic day
Who is just loving the sun? After what was a rubbish winter, it is so nice to wake up knowing the sun is going to be up, smiling and making me smile for the rest of the day. This is definitely one benefit from working from home
It's Prom night in Garforth tonight, I'm looking forward to seeing our local young adults, being shared on social Media by friends and family with their posh frocks (scouse term) and the lads all looking smart with their big hair! Have fun guys you deserve it after all your hard work; I know our Beauty Salons have been busy all day
New Member – we welcome Mark Millar from Marquis Insurance Brokers this week, Garforth born and bred and works a lot out of Cielo Coffee shop, well you may as well work, and get great coffee which is also handy if you need to pop by and see him – find him here on our page.
I share lots of local jobs each week, from Cleaners, to Engineers to Software Developers. I follow a fair few agencies and when they share, so do I. The latest ones released this week are from The Fly Line, which will be the 10th pub in Garforth!! Keep following throughout the week so you don't miss out on all the local jobs, as we share from all sources, including the Garforth Jobs page
I popped into the Redrow home Marketing office this week, more for a nosy as to see where the land lies and where exits onto Ninelands Road will be – It’s worth going in to grab a big map. There are 2 Public Open Space areas, and it will be interesting to see what they will put there, park, playground or just a grassed area? It’s also interesting to see on the map, the Attenuation Facility - which is the process of water retention on site and slowly releasing it in a controlled discharge to a surface water or combined drain or watercourse. The amount of discharge will vary depending whether it is a brown or greenfield site. For brownfield sites the developer must determine the likely run off and agree an acceptable discharge with the environment agency or water authority. For greenfield sites the environment agency normally limits discharge to 5 l/s per hectare (10,000m2) which only represents about 2-3% of run off. - I hope this means it will allivate any more flooding when we get Bad weather and is plunges onto Ninelands Lane?
Nice to read in planning that Moorfield House Surgery on Wakefield Road have been granted permission to alter the roof height to a form dormer windows to front and rear, maybe more room in the surgery perhaps?
News will soon be released from Garforth Dental Surgery, which is above Reed Rains, looking forward to hearing about it very soon -
Stay safe in the sun and remember, you can get some great deals on Sun creams from our local pharmacy’s
Until Next week
Did you take your dog to work today? This is Ian, this as close to us owning a dog in the Thom household as it's going to get. Ian is lovely, cuddly and doesn't need much attention. He's very easy, if a little cheeky!
So how as your week been, are you looking forward to the weather ahead? Just look at this forecast
This week, has been one for running, running everywhere doing lots of things which has inlcuded meeting potential new members, Mark Miller from Marquis Insurance Brokers, and soon we will also have J Mac Joinery on board when he has all his social media up and running with his new company name.
I've had a great interview meeting with James from Rowland Burkitt our local Chartered Surveyors on Main Street as James is putting together is dissertation as part of his Degree and is writing about national multiple retailer, affected retail rental values using the case study of Main Street, Garforth. So I was there on hand answering all his questions with a few points of my own which will be in his dissertation, he told me I should write a book. Now there's an idea, The Garforth Guru !
I have been to the library today for their, Big Get Together event, which was really great... there was cake and lots of it! I had an emoji poo cake... there were many others, but it sort of stuck out, and I had to have the first one! The event was a mix of library staff and community and people from other local groups as well as mums and babes. I hope they do another one, it was great to chat to other local people. I have a meeting with Sascha from the Library next week, we're going to talk about my next project, a fix and repair cafe! I'll fill you in next week.
In between work and eating cake, I have been trying to get fitter, So I have managed, Spinning, Box Fit, Zumba, Pilates and tomorrow I will be trying clubbercise. Fingers crossed, I will be running up and down Garforth soon!
Whilst you enjoy the week's sun, remember the sun cream and the shade from time to time, and don't forget to #shoplocal for all your BBQ needs including the BBQ itself which you can get from Pease as well as the gas bottles.
As well as my new logo, I've also designed a little Emoji, I must say my skin complexion, luscious hair and lack of wrinkles is great - you'll be seeing a lot more of my emoji through the weeks and new posters will be coming soon, throughout Garforth as there are still lots of people to hear about what The Main Deal is all about
Have a great weekend,
Until next week......
Smile Power Day is the perfect excuse to shine your pearly whites and show off those dimples. And no, a smiley face or an emoticon won’t do! Not today, at least. The smile is a symbol of happiness and vitality, a beacon of hope and an expression of emotion. So just for today, drop the ‘:)’ texts and flash them a real smile. Nobody knows who came up with the idea of dedicating a whole 24 hours to the involuntary contraction of the zygomatic major muscle, but one thing is certain: we’re the only creatures on the planet that can do it. Whether fate smiled upon you or not, you can always find a good reason to smile. So grin from ear to ear, look on the bright side and smile your troubles away, just like the great Dr. Seuss suggested: “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.
A Friend of a Friend
What a great morning at Friend of Friend Networking meeting at Cielo. I met some really nice people, a mixture of local people and local businesses. You can see my little talk, which will give you some hints and tips of how best t use social media as a small business. A bit of understanding sometimes helps
Turn the sounds up a little so you can hear my dulcet tones
Yesterday - Alzheimer’s coffee and cake - What a fabulous day yesterday (minus the wind) that caused me some havoc – greenhouse blew over and soil pipe broke away – but besides that we had a wonderful lunchtime, eating cake which was kindly donated by Dumouchel and we drank lovely Tea and Coffee whilst creating some #garforthrocks – we had a laugh, we chatted, we created, we listened to music – all the good things to keep our minds active. We raised £61 + £15.25 in gift aid from just 2 hours of coffee and cake and it’s all going to the Alzheimer’s society -
Look what fun we had!
Celebrating local businesses
Some of you will have seen that Pease are celebrating 100 years on the 14th July - ONE HUNDRED YEARS, that's amazing for any business to achieve this longevity in a business, but more importantly an independent business that has a fabulous track record of family owners taking on the business, decade after decade. May the Pease family continue to be forever, in Garforth.
As well as giving £100 every month to customers, they will be celebrating BIG, on Saturday 14th July
'We are asking local businesses to donate raffle prizes to raise money for St Gemma’s Hospice and Alzheimer’s Society.
Hopefully the sun will be out and Pease of Garforth with the community’s help can raise a lot for these 2 charities.
Lots going on on the day , please like and share to keep up to date with things happening at Pease’s.
It’s also the community festival on Main Street so let’s make a great day and raise lots of money!!!!!'
As The Main Deal, I have donated 3 months membership, what could you offer as a raffle prize?
We will also see Cielo celebrating 10 years on Main Street on the 14th July (it's all happening in Garforth) Again 10 years for an independent business, especially Cielo with such a good ethos behind their business, the more we drink, buy coffee and tuck into their new lunch time menu, the more they can just keep giving. A social enterprise company at it's best - watch out for their event on the evening of the 14th July when their Acoustic Night goes large. Tickets on sale at the counter.
14th July is going to be great on Main Street, With Garforth Feastival market Stalls and celebrations and music; we just have to pray for good weather #everythingcrossed Garforth
Tonight Gin Friday at Quirky Ales from 6pm
Tonight - Ninelands Summer Fair from 6pm

Everyone deserves a bit of me time, and my husband deserves this more than anyone, as he allows us as a family to be able to do lots of things
Buy local for your Dad this Fathers Day, eat local, drink local and the sun is set to shine. - Start with buying him Breakfast to take away from Freshly Made on Aberford Road, open from 9am - get your orders in 0113 287 3896
Until next week
Who's your best Friend? Are they crazy and fun just like you? What makes them your best friend? Besides the #thomboys this includes Mr Thom, my best friend is a the person I grew up with, the person that will, besides my family members, know me the longest and the best. My best friend was there when I made a fool our of myself in my teenage years, but luckily, growing up in the 90's there was not much online proof of silly behaviour to be documented; but she has the best memory !
Embrace your friends, they know too much about you to fall out with them
Welcome back, I hope everyone had a really nice half term break for those of you with Children or Grandchildren. The weather was much better, compared to this week,… just when we were getting used to it.
As always the first week back after school hols is always busy and, admin work demands attention, I'm needing to finalise my accounts for Business Works, my accountant. I like to get them in as soon as I can as it's another year done.
500 people have heard of it, have you? #Garforthrocks – Garforth Rocks has been created by the lovely, Sam Whitley, a local lady who you will have seen working in most of our local cafe's and, The Gin Shack; she’s the funny one who you can hear laughing for miles.
“Welcome to Garforth Rocks. Following on from successful groups around the country I thought it would be nice to bring some of the fun to Garforth.
If you have found a rock post a picture of either you and the rock or just the rock on this page with a description of where it was found. This will help the person who decorated it see how far the rock has travelled. Then either keep the rock or re hide it elsewhere.
If you want to take part then the idea is to decorate rocks, and hide them in various locations to brighten someone's day. Make sure to seal your masterpiece with sealer and write on the back of your creation..." Facebook #Garforth Rocks. Keep or Re-hide". Then hide your rock.
This is meant to be fun for every one of all ages and abilities. Get creative and get outside =)
Remember to be respectful of private property and businesses.”
Here's how to get involved
Next Thursday, 14th June, it’s Coffee and cupcake day in aid of, Alzheimer’s Society – I’m hosting a cake and coffee day in my home with some friends and family. My Granddad had early onset Dementia and I saw him change so much, it was such a sad few years for all of our family, and like any charity, if we can raise funds to help find a prevention and do so by eating cake, being with friends, laughing and enjoying life; which is always good for the mind, then we should get involved. I’m also adding the theme of #Garforthrocks. My dining room table will be full of rocks (bought from Pease) with Sharpies so people can create, colour and do something positive with their mind. I will let you know how much we raise and how many cakes we have eaten, next week. If we raise just £50 if would pay for a communication tool that uses symbols rather than words to help people with advanced dementia communicate.
This week I closed the doors on Garforth Hour. After 3 and half years of tweeting hours, it was losing it’s momentum and it didn’t feel productive anymore. Earlier in the year, I changed it to GarforthLife and to once a month to try and engage people more, but unfortunately I think it has just come to it’s natural end. The initial idea was to engage businesses and get them using and understanding twitter, which it did.. In that time we’ve been lucky enough to see great success, so many businesses working together, cross marketing. We had several businesses who took up sponsorship with Garforth In Bloom and I’m proud to say the initial idea for Garforth Feastival came from Garforth Hour, so it certainly had it's day, and a successful time it was.
However, all is not totally lost, I am supporting the networking event, A friend of friend which is run my Michelle Roberts who owns Savings and Scents, and she and a friend, run a monthly meet up at Cielo from 9.30am in the morning, the next one is Friday 15th June, and I have been invited to come along and to do a talk about social media and The Main Deal, I promise, if I' m talking for too long, just show me some cake! Everyone is welcome to attend, community and businesses.

I'm saddened to read that the proposed bar that applied for planning on Chapel Close has been refused. A small independent bar, that would be sophisticated, bring in new clientele to Garforth and would, most certainly, be the catalyst of new businesses wanting to be part of our night time vibe. I find it frustrating that massive corporate companies which create more traffic, noise and pollution seem to glide in... Does money talk?
We need to get the balance right and thus far, we are tipping over on large corporate companies. Why be like every other town?
Onward and upwards, I'll see how we can get these guys into Garforth, mission no. 465
Until next week..........
My name is Christine Thom, I came to live in Garforth nearly 22 years ago; you may have seen me around ?
