What are your plans this weekend, are you lucky enough to be away for that one last break this summer, or like me are you sharing it with friends and family at home, hoping the rain stays off for a BBQ?
Talking about rain, dare I mention last week’s horrendous downpour- thunder- lightening- hail storm of a Saturday we had? Again, so many people had leaks, including me, but we were lucky compared to some people as close as Fairburn Drive who were yet again, flooded. I know a fair few other roads and areas in Garforth were also flooded. Garforth has grown but the infrastructure hasn't so we're not able to cope. However, as it always seems, Garforth has a little life line of help, Garforth Flooding Support Group
If you ever need any help now or in the future, these are the local people to contact.
WORD ON THE STREET
Congratulations and Good Luck to Cielo who have just received keys for their 3rd Coffee shop. They'll soon be opening on Duncan Street in Leeds City Centre, I look forward to feeling proud of their huge achievements with a cortado in my hand when I'm next in town and the refurb is complete - fantastic news
Proposed plans for Town End, and a possible new shop chain, coming along! Meeting on 17th September, will give us more information – I’ll come back when I know more
Details on block of nine flats on Green Lane #goingtobesmall
Looks like the Co-op will soon be having a facelift too – pending consideration in planning
Streetlife – Social media page
Somebody once said, Street life is Facebook for OAP’s, I beg to differ, I have been promoting on Street life and had a few lovely conversations with people and some great feedback. However there are a few persistent people I'm finding on Street life that like to be negative, pessimistic and a place they can hide behind technology and say whatever they like, after all, it’s an open forum!!! I'm thinking it’s time to give it a wide berth and see if some of these people in and around Garforth find inner happiness, - I say, if you expect the worst, you'll never be disappointed.
Garforth Community Choir is growing and is now on the website
http://www.themaindeal.co.uk/garforth-community-choir.html - click on to find out how it all got started, how it happened and where it’s all at – the choir is a fun community choir, it’s not about if you can sing, it’s about if you want to sing
This week I’ve had 33,079 hits to the website, this month has had fewer hits, but I expected this with it being summer holidays for most. But it’s still growing in the right direction and when people are fully back in September our shops will be busier too in the lead up to the Christmas months. #shoplocal
It's been a quiet week this week, I can see in my stats that most people are clearly still lucky enough to be on their holidays #luckyyou
TMD HQ hasn't been quiet though, reviews and meetings this week, glad to see another two businesses are happy with being on The Main Deal and actually 'grateful for being with such a good service' - These are the words that make the work even more, worthwhile.
As much as having my boys off on holiday is great, I am looking forward to some kind of normal working hours, staying up til 11pm catching up is no fun, but things have to keep ticking along.
It hasn't been all work and no play, last weekend was full of local fun with The Garforth Beers Festival #thebestoneyet - the turnout was great and they were running out of beer fast, not the cider though with one of them, TOP COPPER being a 7.4% - so I had to try it .... very nice. The live music was fantastic but perhaps a little too loud for the size of the venue, but luckily Garforth's own weather system was on our side and the sun was shining until late.
It was fun to see a couple of cyclists had stopped for a beer or 7; it was also a good job they left pushing their bikes! The Hubby and I then left for a spectacular meal at our fabulous Italian, La Bella Vita. The Al Funghi risotto is my favourite, so much so, no one dare speak to me when it is being consumed.... might be the only thing that shuts me up!
Sunday was a quiet night out with the neighbours of the street, an evening of eating; again at our local Aagrah, Sunday Buffet, I've never had it before and it was, if a little unreadable and a bit unsure what was in the choice; and I'm a curry queen, however, reading and not understanding was not an issue, the food was fabulous as was the large Cobra beers that assisted the curries and sides and puddings.... not a great week for Charlotte Martin our local Zumba classes to be on holiday!... so, so much for a quiet evening.... Monday morning, I felt a little delicate when heading down to the cricket ground #greatlead
So Garforth has been on the Telly this week! Garforth Parish Cricket Club on Green Lane has put on the best week for teaching our local children, both boys and girls and 96 of them the 'Ins' and 'Outs' of cricket, my own son went as he did last year as it's set up so well and he thoroughly enjoys every minute. The coaches are wonderful and as you will see in the video, one of them is quite well known
Check it out 5 minutes 45 seconds in
I became a Child Friendly Leeds Ambassador this week, something to add to Garforth area through The Main Deal in how we can help do things for our kids as they grow in our city and towns. You may have seen lots of links and posts already as I feel they are a wonderful asset to have in our area and the things they can provide and ideas we can all do to assist our younger generation through what I feel, a more difficult era to grow up in. - I will attend quarterly meetings and be involved in things in the area that could benefit children - and I get a nice badge!
WORD ON THE STREET
I follow StreetLife and follow local conversations and input where I think is, 1. relevant or 2.helpful. This week there has been a 7 day conversation about how Main Street could improve its traffic and parking, something that I'm sure everyone in Garforth has an opinion about. Yes we know there are issues, and yes we know it's packed, and yes we know people use it for the a parking area to then take the train or bus in to town, but please don't let it stop you shopping local - I never have an issue, waiting a few minutes now and again is not an issue and crossing over on 3 available crossings is also not an issue, as many of your will know, I spend a lot of time in Main Street and it's really not a #bigissue
I feel a suggestion will always be just that, a suggestion unless someone actually does something about it, and I personally know trying to get white lines and a restriction zone by Fairburn Drive shops, is no easy task, but working with the right people, being persistant could actually see changes in the future. Don't talk....walk
2 weeks and the kids go back, will we hear tears of cries from our teachers and tears of joy from parents?
Anyway, make sure you look local for school clothes, as well as SPT selling all the branded items, please don't forget the wonderful Dorothy Annes for school uniforms, as well as pumps, and PE kits and underwear and also Lasercharge at the top of town for all your stationery needs, they have great back to school kit for £13.50... there's loads in it
Next Traders meeting will be held in September where discussions about Christmas, this years FiveRaffle and Halloween Windows will be discussed.....#spooky
Now have a great evening and weekend, I'm off to order dinner
Hello Garforth how has it all been going? I came back on Tuesday to lovely weather and now look at it.... I feel we're still waiting for summer. What happened to the one's in the 70's we used to get, I'm sure when the school gate closed the sun came out for 6 weeks!
I've had a few enquiries whilst I've been away, and Looking at adding another couple of businesses to the fold... watch this space in September, there is also a few other things changing with current businesses too... sounds all exciting
Did you notice our new business Kandy Land Karts and Sweet Buffets came on just before I went away? A great little business from home in Garforth. They do some great things for parties and not just sweets for kids, adults will love them too. Great for hiring for any party especially a wedding. Take a look
Garforth Hour Live was a great night and thank you to the great ladies at Business Works for hosting, feeding and watering us, also a great big thank you to the talented Lee Mitchell from LMX Creative for the photos. It was great to meet some new businesses too. Our next one is scheduled for September 22nd - venue TBC
Garforth Community Choir
As previous blog posts have mentioned; with the help of a few other local lovely individuals, I have been putting together a Community Choir. We are now at a stage of possibly working with Arts Live at Garforth Academy which brings the choir a venue and a very qualified choir master - We should know more about start dates in September. If you are interested in joining, and this is open to anyone aged 17+ Please join us on Facebook and all details of costs and further information are here
We will be looking into a children's choir over the next few months
Garforth Beer Festival - tomorrow 11am - 11pm -
Something great, something local, something fun - I will be there from 6.30pm, I hope to see you, come and find me, say hello over a beer or 3
WORD ON THE STREET
On a sad note
A poor family has lost everything in a tragic fire above Lloyds Chemist on Fairburn Drive which happened on Tuesday morning, luckily they were rescued and are well. The young lady is pregnant and also has a little girl, so if you can donate anything, Chris at Chris' Fruit and Veg shop has a collection box and if you get in touch with Globe Not for Profit on Facebook, they are also helping with anything they can to find household items to replace the ones that were lost in the fire. Of course the family need to find a new place yet, but when they do, it means they maybe able to put some things in it and make it a home.
Wetherspoons is still in PLanning and pending consideration, if you wanted a nosey, here is another chance to see their plans
Before I went away, the website got to 30,100 hits, this was a big number I wanted to hit and I was chuffed to bits that people are clearly using the website to find out information about Garforth. As well as this, our Twitter and Facebook page are also very active, come and join in
@Garforthtoday and https://www.facebook.com/themaindeal
I'm looking forward to a night out with some girl friends on Sunday evening at, The Aagrah, I may see you there, get a picture if you are there and out with your friends or family, as they're putting it on their social media sites
My name is Christine Thom, I came to live in Garforth 20 years ago; you may have seen me around ?
