Mia’s Nails (new business) have opened where Scream Hairdressers used to be, Chapel Lane. A very nice couple, Mia and Tuan. Mia has been a qualified beautician for over 20 years and joined us on Tuesday for Garforth hour.
Garforth Hour went well this week, not as many businesses there this time, but we did have a special guest, Harry Gration from BBC Look North, a great surprise to all the people who attended Garforth Hour and great publicity for Garforth as Harry Re-tweeted pictures and photographs about promoting garforth local businesses.
Thanks also to Nicky Busby who kindly asked Harry to come along and support the growth of Garforth Hour Live nights. Nicky is a great local lady who is extremely passionate about Yorkshire and a wonderful and keen photographer. Nicky is also running for Jane’s Appeal and has a goal to run 1000k this year, so far she has reached 884k – can you give her help and sponsor her in her mission - look on her great twitter page for more details and information @Yorkshireimages - a local lady doing great things.

White Lines!! – well white something
It’s taken 17 months, a pot of white paint and 20 minutes to get the small 'T' type paint marks on Fairburn Drive outside the parade of shops; to say I’m a little disappointed.... I asked for PARKING LINES. They did however, put double yellow lines on the corner, where nobody parks!
I just hope over time when people get used to them, that it makes parking better – the staff in Chris’ shop have said people are definitely using them and parking is better. As usual, a few people are also voiced their opinion about them! I campaigned to put them here to make people park better, safer and get more cars parked together in order we encourage people to stop and shop. As mentioned in last week’s blog, we're also waiting for a Restriction Time sign in order people and staff of shops don't take the spaces for a longer period of time .... perhaps another 17 months! Let's just hope it's big enough to read
A fair few traders and people thought we were getting a new shop this week! When Habits signage was taken down, it revealed an old disused sign for Stefans Jewellers - I'm fairly sure if Genix' plans get passed through planning, their sign will be up next, loud and clear - I think it will help people gain access better too. #84second stannah stairlift is a bit tedious!
I see a lot of our business owners throughout the week, and the same conversation comes up each time, why is there not pattern to why people choose to either come to a shop, come to a local fitness class or stop in for a coffee? A lot of people have a lot to say about Garforth and what it should be and how it could improve and how much we have of this and that there’s not enough of that.... shop with what we've got, or it WILL BE GONE... I’m shouting as its reality not a plea..
Just a thought - Kippax high street lost the support of its community!
Garforth Community Choir soon to start - are you signing up – come and become part of the fun I want to create in our town – 'Don’t let things happen, go out and happen to things' - TMD Mission Statement
New GCC Logo coming soon, designed by John Harrison, our fabulous local artist, of course...
I will be away this weekend with my old school friends from the. Wirral. I decision made a while back that when the 40th year was upon us, we would celebrate in style, with fun, laughter and a few cheeky glasses of vino. Thankfully my Main Deal Facebook page is not linked to my personal one... as well as staying in a luxurious cabin in the middle of North Wales, one of my old bosom buddies thought it would be a grand idea to also hire a canal boat for day trip on the proviso that 23 years ago I was in the Sea Cadets! Wish me luck #prayforme
This week has seen Facebook and Twitter extremely busy, with a weekly reach of 5,895 and Twitter growing in followers. I also reached a massive number this week on Twitter - I have sent 10,000 tweets! Sharing is caring.
Until next week
BUY LOCAL OR BYE LOCAL...........................
Water Monitoring Day - wouldn't it be good with all that water we get flooded by in Garforth every year be monitored and used better - just a costly thought on today's national day!
A busy week, with new customers, new insights and evening meetings
I look forward to receiving information from Kip McGrath , Beyond Inspired and Mia’s Nail & beauty salon who will be our new members added on next week.
Unfortunately, Holiday Inn were not up for putting all my fun marketing cards in each room for guests to see more of the place they are staying in exchange for advertising events at holiday inn to which locals could attend! Anyway, they still seem keen to work with local business and local produce – so we’ll see what happens over the next few weeks with this, I hope they walk the talk!
Word on the Street
Tuesday‘s meeting was Garforth Christmas committee meeting - which is a whole host of people, from Traders to Councillors, Leeds City Council, Community and Garforth Lions. Lots of new things happening this year such as a Christmas Market organised by the lovely Debbie at Angels and Butterflies, a clown act on the street, Ronnie the Rhino, a local radio station and some sporting celebrities – I hear names like Josh Warrington being branded about!
Wednesday’s meeting was Garforth Traders meeting discussing proposed planning and events.
Fiveraffle will be brought back this year and yes, we will be offering 1 massive prize for 1 lucky winner, it has been mentioned by a few about doing 3 prizes, but as you all know by now, I’m not one for doing things ‘we’ve always done it that way’ and as I’ve had experience in doing this before, I know it works; we raised a great amount in less than 4 weeks last year. Like last year, we will be encouraging you to give your town a HIGH FIVE, 5 tickets for 5 pounds, but you can buy 1 ticket if you wish. All proceeds go into a pot which goes back into the Street.
We have been looking at extra Christmas decorations this year, our initial thought was Christmas trees and brackets for each shop, only 19 shops were interested and each shop was being quoted at about £250 for the initial set up!.... far too expensive for the money we had to spend, even traders putting extra money in. If you know of an electrician or you are an electrician who can do this for free... send him my way!
We will be looking at working with the council next year to perhaps bring some new motifs sponsored by the trader’s #workinprogress
However we will see some of the money spent on shop window decorations this year, so all is not lost and hopefully this will make Main Street sparkle a little bit more along with their competition window displays.
We will be drawing the Fiveraffle on Stage on the Christmas Lights night - Saturday 28th November
Thursday’s meeting – was all about planners, engineers and architects from Sainsbury’s coming to talk to us about the proposal ideas and plans for a Netto Store – see here what was said by Councillor Mark Dobson https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=1067480443263791&id=126980367313808
PAINT MY LINES – FAIRBURN DRIVE
As previously mentioned in blogs gone by, I have been trying to get painted lines and parking restrictions on Fairburn Drive for the parade of shops, in order people can stop and shop more safely. The council had no money to knock down the wall and put in bigger, better spaces on an angle which was initially suggested, so we asked for painted parking spaces so the area could be managed better along with the lovely Chris from the veg shop who has filled in the holes in and around the side and cleared the area at the back so all shop staff can park so they’re not taking up the much needed spaces at the front, hence also, the restriction for parking as shops were also finding people at seasonal times parking and then getting a bus into town! It’s been a somewhat frustrating project as we’re now 17 months in and no man with a white paint brush has been scheduled to come and paint the area as requested.... after several contacts made to the big honcho of highways and the pokes from Mark Dobson, we’re still waiting for a date...... You may see me cartwheel along the wall when it’s completed. Getting people to be able to #shoplocal is sometimes really hard!
The plans for flats on Green Lane, near East Garforth the train station has gone from 9 to 8, maybe that swinging cat complained about the possible space!
It has been nice to hear Mumbai Kitchen has had great reviews since its opening on the 14th September and it’s nice to see some great tweets and posts about them too - maybe a Main Deal member soon!
Great to see the Garforth Community Choir has reached the Art Live Programme and gone out to schools this week – we’re now at 22... All being well, we should be starting at the end this month..... https://www.facebook.com/groups/1734083406819196/ - come and see, and join in this great local project
Garforth Catering who are connected with Garforth Town Football Club came to me this week and asked about using local produce – they are now using Firth's Butchers for their pork pie offering and fresh fruit from Chris’ Fruit and Veg for all their players – cross marketing and local using local always puts a smile on my face
Garforth Hour Live event is being held at The Gaping Goose next Tuesday, 22nd September from 8pm #porkpie and a #pint whilst tweeting with local businesses, what more could you ask for? Sign up if you’re a business in Garforth or nearby. http://www.themaindeal.co.uk/garforth-hour.html
Tonight I have ‘usher’ training – don’t ask!
Facebook has been busy this week with a weekly reach of 2,630. This week's website stats are 36,270 hits since January ( I need to start thinking about doing something exciting for my first year in business) - any suggestions what one can do?
BUY LOCAL OR IT'S BYE LOCAL..............
Friday came around quickly! I can't believe we've completed a full week of school already, why do the school holiday weeks never go so quickly?!......
I've had lots going on this week, catching up with mountains of paperwork; darn having years of experience as a PA!
Meeting new people, seeing new companies, having Cielo Coffee, talking about planning on Main Street, adding more people to the Community Choir and adding new people onto the website........;
Which leads me to introduce to you Graham Reynard Photography who has joined The Main Deal this week under the, 'Unique Businesses on our Doorstep' category. Please take a look at his website and snapshop of his portfolio on our pages
Graham (Mr Fox) looks like a great photographer who seems extremely passionate about his work, professional with a great added sense of fun.
Meeting The Holiday Inn - Cross Marketing
I had a fabulous meeting yesterday with The Holiday Inn, I want to work more closely with the larger companies in Garforth, try to encourage these companies to also, like you, the community, look closer to home first; and it also means they could be giving their guests more. By working with me closely, I would like The Holiday Inn to try, where possible to use Garforth local produce, for example, Dumouchel Bread, Cielo Coffee etc
To give their customers more of a service whilst staying at their hotel, It would be great if in every room they had information on how to connect to the Garforth Live Page and see what's going on near the hotel they are staying, obviously the hotel offer a wonderful restaurant and bar (soon to be refurbished) gym and pool facilities, but what if a guests wanted a hairdresser, a barber a tan shop, a local shop.... etc, etc Now they would be able to see them.
After our initial meeting, HI seem keen, early stages, but it would be great to get our bigger businesses and local businesses working together - #crossmarketing is key for all and it's easily done
These cards you many have spotted now and again in and around Garforth - if you ever see one, send me your picture to say you have spotted one to my twitter account @garforthtoday
Garforth Hour Live will now be held at The Gaping Goose on the 22nd September at 8pm, hosted by Jon Fallas Insurance, one of our great local businesses - If you're a local business in and around Garforth, please come and join in and register your attendance to this great free event at a great local pub #porkpie anyone
Word on the Street
CO-OP reopened today - I wondered if this would be the case in our all new singing & dancing store? The pilot scheme of supporting local customers, the map outside says so?!
However, on my visit round the store (just to be nosey) the wording at the top brightens the place up, the new fridge freezers look smart and I believe, are more economical, but unless I was to look on every shelf for the support of locally sourced produce, there’s not a huge amount changed; perhaps wider aisles and a refresh is all it needed??? #nosingingordancing noticeable
Old Habits building – 45 Main Street; owned by Henry Lax Will soon become Genix HealthCare, expanding their premises! - pending consideration on the planning access, but you can have a look at how big it’s going to be, here
Don't forget, if you're interested in listening to the developers (Netto - owned by Sainsburby's) talk about their plans at the top of Townend, please do come along to Cielo at 5.30pm on Thursday 17th September
A busy week with people back at work and getting back into routine, you're all looking local again, along with a very busy Garforth Hour straight from 8.00pm to 9.00pm - Sore RT Finger! This week's stats are 35,500 - on our way to 40,000 hits
BUY LOCAL OR IT'S BYE LOCAL..............
Did you? Bring your manners to work today? Luckily I can say what i like in my own office, to the boss, at the boss; it's only me who can take offence!
3 sleeps and counting, come on, for those of you who have children, you really are counting those sleeps #longholidays
Monday I'll be back in the office full time and able to look at the next few weeks of marketing and getting those companies who said they are coming onboard in September, on board. Watch this space and the social media shout outs. I'm also attending lots of meetings this month including Garforth Christmas Committee Meeting, Traders Meeting and Town End Planning meeting
Word on the Street
So the event has been publicised for 17th September at Cielo 5.30pm for Town End planning. It is Netto (who are owned by Sainsbury's) who will be holding the meeting and I'm glad they have opened it for anyone to attend - should they wish. I'm sure once they have put their point across, there will be plenty of hands raised and questions asked. I will be there with a few of the Traders from Main Street, my aim is to find out if they have thought about the high street and local surrounding businesses; can they actually influence more trade not take it away, could they offer much needed parking spaces for local shoppers?
As mentioned in last weeks, blog, The Co-op is having a refurb, the shop closed on Wednesday until 11th September - I wonder what it will be like? I'm hoping more staff, less waiting in a massive queue, but perhaps that's more money needed than a new floor and a few shelves changed!
It's always a really rubbish post to share when Garforth in Bloom post about someone stealing their plants again! this time is was near to Miller & Carter Restaurant - it's getting a bit sad when someone is stealing plants.
More Apartments on the land next to Nisa - someone thought it was parking for Nisa, but this is showing 11 apartments and 2 new outlets!
Our next Garforth Hour Live night is scheduled for 22nd September - can you be the business that hosts it? Garforth Town Football Club were pencilled in, we were waiting on match times, and on this occasion they have a home match so we are now looking at November for them to host. If you can host on this evening from 8pm-9.30pm, it's a great way to showcase yourself and the last two have been successful at Business Works and La Bella Vita. Contact me for further information: email@example.com
Tomorrow is National Charity day in the UK
Which is always great to have a day where we think of other people in need, especially at the moment with all the news and media about the Syrian migrants. Whether it's something you agree with or not, or it's something that perhaps isn't relevant to our town, I personally think it's something you need to think of as a human being, no human being is illegal and if you can help in any way over the next week, then please do. Tomorrow and Sunday, you can drop of a donation at St Benedicts Church for the #DoctorsOf The World Charity who will be taking your donations to Calais.
Also we have a local lady Sarah Hey who is collecting boxes of goods to go over in a van to London and then onwards. You can also drop these boxes off at Absolutely Fabulous next to Barclays Bank before the 11th September - if you can, give a little, you know it will mean a lot
Contact SARAH HEY ON Sarah_hey@icloud.com for more information
Some ideas of what include in the boxes are:

Lots of people ask me, 'why don't you have this company or that business on The Main Deal.' I am growing each week, slowly but surely, but it is up to me to convince people that The Main Deal is a great place to be and be seen; My existing members think so. My goal over next 4 months before my first year of trading is to have a lot more businesses on here, but things take time especially when you're the only person doing everything. Luckily I am now at a stage where businesses are coming to me to ask to be advertised and I've also had a recommendation which is always great. - But feel free to push people in my direction...
Over the last week the stats have been going up and up, people are back from holidays and wanting to look at what's going on locally. This week we're up to 34,515 hits.
BUY LOCAL OR IT'S BYE LOCAL..............
My name is Christine Thom, I came to live in Garforth 20 years ago; you may have seen me around ?
