As you read this week's Blog, listen to this to help you get in the mood
It’s Garforth's favourite time of the year! Christmas Lights Switch on and for all of those of you wondering why it is on a Saturday, come on keep up, it changed last year. The reason for the change was so it could be more of a weekend thing, and this year it is, thanks to the hard work of the Christmas Committee, this year it’s over 2 days… yes, 2 days. There are lots on with Christmas Market stalls setting up from 2pm and better food choices, this year too, i'm hoping there is not frozen burger van in site! #foodsnob
Some of our own foody guys will also have their own Christmas stall, Cielo, Sweetshakes and Pride and Produce as well as Quirky Ales…… Most of our café’s and takeouts will be open too and we also have Duke's Pizza van, they were at the Gala in the summer and a big American school bus! There is also Chilli, soup, coffee, mulled wine, hot chocolate, doughnuts, waffles, new york hot dogs & burgers, vegetarian options, pizza, cakes, breads, sweets, fudge, beer, wine......I bet you said that all in one breath! There are some of very well known businesses in garforth sharing in the fun with some fabulous stalls this year...... big and better by far
There is also a procession this year leaving from Wheatleys arriving on stage just after 5.00pm with Santa.....!
Look out for our fabulous Community Choir singing on stage at 5.15pm as well as Millie Cranston, Garforth Academy Band, Caroline Atha School of Dance, Cole, Garforth Jubilee Brass Band, Strawberry Fields School Choir, Katy Marchant (our own home grown Olympian)and Ronnie the Rhino switching on the lights...
Don’t forget to shop at Ladycares, there are a fair few items here, and you only have a few weeks left before the Lady that Cares has gone, so do pop in. St Gemma's is joining in the fun so pop in to see them.
Don't forget to visit the market on Sunday too from 10am-4pm and again our own cafe's will be open. The Road will be open on this day
Road Closes on Saturday from 4.00pm - 8.00pm
LIGHTS SWITCH ON AT 7.00pm
This is going to be a fabulous weekend, and the weather looks good too, much, much better than last year!
Well done to our Local businesses who entered the best Christmas Window
The Post Office – 1st Prize
Precious Bridals – 2nd Prize
G E Hartley – 3rd Prize (I personally love this)
It was nice to read that Vicar Cooper from St Mary's loved every window he visited… It was nice to hear that 'most' of our shops loved spending the time having fun creating their fabulous window displays… but it was sad to hear that, as always in life, there’s always one that takes things too far…… #toocompetative
I went LIVE this week, if you missed it, you need to look on the Facebook page and find it, it's all about Dumouchel : ) As it was a great success I plan to do more on the lead up to Christmas. Next one will be on Monday at 1pm.... so come and join in with your likes, smiley faces and comments #benice
We will be welcoming Mr Smith Locksmiths next week. a very friendly chap who loves his stuff, and who will really look after your cares and needs should you require new locks or changing some to keep your home safe, or your business.

#MIG Mum in Garforth
As an adult, I haven’t been one to get too wrapped up with Christmas. As a couple, we don’t have many Christmas traditions. Having a baby has made us think about how we can celebrate and make Christmas special for our growing family.
This year, we’re planning on checking out local activities happening for Christmas. Even though Tommy is too young to remember, there’s no better time to begin forging new traditions.
Locally, I’m looking forward to seeing the Garforth Christmas Light Switch-on & Christmas Market this weekend, the Lotherton Hall Christmas Experience, and the Magical Lantern Festival Yorkshire at Roundhay Park.
What are your favourite things to do around Garforth and Leeds for Christmas? Share your family traditions on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @garforthkitchen or email me on email@example.com.
#WOTS (word on the street)
Wow, all of a sudden Wetherspoons is a height of activity, due to open in March 2017, I suspect looking at the lovely artists pictures on the front of the hoardings, it's a good job they have finally started, it looks very nice indeed.
Miami will start in spring with Lidl opening in Summer 2017
Redrow Homes are proposing 238 homes on Stocks site. Public drop in, for more information will be this Monday, please attend, I may see you there, with not enough money for new school or road extension provision, I'd like to hear how on earth they plan to 'fit it all in'. Oh and a terraced house price starts from £300k ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha......
I'm out at the Fox and Grapes tonight, a place to eat, drink and shop #christmasfair
If you see me tomorrow evening at the Lights Switch on, please do come and say hello
Be as local as you can this weekend, there is no excuse not to be in Garforth
Until next week.................
National, Mickey Mouse Day! Why does he get a day? I'm not really a fan of the old MM or anything Disney for that matter, especially the man dressed up in the suit version, squeaky annoying voice puts me off! How did you Get Minnie, Mickey I’ll never know!
Weeks seem to be flying by, and there are lots of excited people counting down to Christmas already, as much as I do get giddy about Christmas, I have to wait until at least the 1st December....! However, I do practice with Mulled wine, Port and hot Camembert before then! Just in the run up to the 1st.
As I type I'm listening to the lovely Rehearsals from this week's choir practice; they're Christmas singing do put you in a good mood, especially as it's so unbelievable yucky out side... who ordered the wet rain, dark clouds and cold?!
You can see the list of all their up and coming gigs here, some are right here on our doorstep - http://www.themaindeal.co.uk/garforth-community-choir.html
They have one tonight if you're popping anywhere for a drink, go to The Bird in Hand
Gig @ Bird in Hand Pub
I met with the lovely Emma from East Garforth Primary Academy's PTA today a really lovely lady with great plans, passionate and extremely proactive about the school and telling me all about their fabulous new team there too. You will definitively be seeing more posts from them as they share to the community from their Christmas Fair to lots more happening in 2017
Here is a MIG (Mum in Garforth) as promised in earlier blogs, Christine is going to be guest blogging for all you new Mums out there who find yourself in a new chapter in your life; home with a new born
Hello, I’m Christine. You may remember me from my guest blog post in the summer. I was pregnant at the time, now I’m the proud mum of my two-and-a-half month old bundle of love and trouble, Tommy.
I’ll be blogging about my experience of being a new mum and what’s happening in and around Garforth. I’d like to create a space to share what’s happening in our community, not just for new mums – I want to help Garforth become more connected.
You can follow me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram on @garforthkitchen. Why Garforth Kitchen? Because at our house, the kitchen is the room we spend the most time in together. It’s where we cook, eat, drink, listen to music, dance, laugh and have our best conversations.
Since having Tommy, I’ve put on my trainers and hit the pavement more than ever before. It’s been a great way of easing back into exercise and getting him some fresh air. We go out in the pushchair, or if I’m feeling more energetic, I carry him in the baby carrier.
We’ve had a lovely Autumn so far. We had a nice walk in Temple Newsam to check out the pretty colours, and we’ve been all over Garforth (even in the snow). Sometimes we go out with a destination in mind (like visiting the new Garforth Garden Centre, going to Main Street to grab a panini from the Good Food Store or buy fruit and veg from the Greengrocer), sometimes we just go for a wander.
I’ve come to appreciate how big Garforth is! I dusted off my pedometer last week and aiming to get over 5,000 steps a day (I managed 10,000 in a big walk the other day).
Where are your favourite places to walk around Garforth? Tell me on Facebook or Twitter, and keep an eye out for us walking around town! You could even join us for a stroll.
Tomorrow there will be a craft fair run by Debbie from Angels and Butterflies, held in the Welfare Hall.
You may have already been this week to the Welfare Hall, how many have you been to see, 'A Fly in the Ointment' played by our very own local Amateur Dramatics society? It's their last night tomorrow, see last week's blog for details.
Garforth Film - buy your tickets here for The Muppet Christmas Carol showing on the 17th December, get into Christmas with this fabulous local community event – many more to follow throughout the year, if this is successful #supporthegoodofgarforth
Pictures floating about on other social media pages this week, it looks like Miami have started tidying up the site! They're not due to start building until Spring next year, but I suppose they have to do a lot of prep work first!
Next week is the big weekend in Garforth for lights Switch on, Don't forget it's Saturday and Sunday, information will be posted next Friday
Buy local, most of our local shops have some fabulous things to buy, especially our foody places #lookcloser They all have gifts
Chris' Fruit and Veg
Pride & Produce
The Station House
Until next week......
We should never forget, no matter how much time passes. We all know, we wouldn't be here if it wasn't for what happened, so we need to be thankful everyday and remember what they did for us and our future . I hope you were able to be to pay your respects , just for 2 minutes
TODAY is also, Origami day… Happy Folding paper !
Last week’s Podcast was a tad long, I hope you manged to get through it…. fifteen minutes of talking non stop, is long….. Well, perhaps not for me!
A mad week with snow hitting our ground and a very loud Trump being heard all around the world! Nobody ever wants to hear a Trump, but they can make people laugh and cause embarrassment – Hold on tight USA, there’s a lot that can happen in 4 years! I have a feeling 2016, may have a line through it in history books going forward; if that makes sense!
On a lighter note........
The John Lewis advert came out this week; I always look forward to seeing it, it brings us that little bit closer to Christmas and it makes you sit, watch, and smile for a while #bustertheboxer and to be a little controversial, I also like Kevin the carrot - Aldi! Perhaps we should make one next year for Garforth? Now there's a thought! #cogsturning
Some lovely comments this week on social media about Chris’ Fruit and Veg and his arrangements of flowers, he is the perfect place to go to for all sorts of things, but his flowers especially, he is so highly recommended for his arrangements, choice and price; but please be aware folks, flower prices have gone up to ridiculous prices for ALL our florists, therefore some places are having to go up in price a little, what traders were once paying; 75p per a lily, they’re now paying £1.10!
Besides Chris’ lovely flowers, we really do need to make more of an effort with his shop, we really do. As most of you will have read; if you’re a TMD blog follower, I worked with some of the shops and LCC to get white lines painted on the parking area outside and to get staff of shops to try and park elsewhere leaving the front free for customers only to hopefully encourage people to stop and shop more.
We are really lucky to still have these shops and Chris’ Fruit and Veg Shop selling a fair amount of what we need, I use Chris' little shelf (no connection to his height) a lot as this selection of fruit and veg is stuff that needs using that day, it can pulped into soups and pasta sauces or given to small pets!… I use this a lot because, I love food and hate waste. I also spend, on average £35 a month in Chris’ shop, I’m a family of 4, imagine if we all just spent £20 in his shop, he could offere diferrent and mperhaps more products, he could invest in his shop more, and more importantly, he could stay open for many more years to come!
Give it a try, a local shop buy – Chris is open 7 days a week, closes at 1.30 on Sundays…. It’s about making a little effort so we can make big changes
Thank you so very much to Business Works for hosting and providing food and drinks and The Gin Shack for providing a lovely GIn Fizz along with all our lovely local businesses who attended Garforth Hour Live on Tuesday, it's something I do as part of The Main Deal and you don't even have to be a member and it's FREE to attend. It's a great way to connect and meet other local businesses, It's NOT a corporate evening out, it's a sociable occasion where you can talk and see how if you can help each other..... and it does work - Our next one will be in Februry 2017.
Keep a look out if you're a local business http://www.themaindeal.co.uk/garforth-hour.html
I had a lovely meeting with the ladies of Augustus Court care home this week. As mentioned in last week’s podcast, they are looking at holding community activities in house with local people and their current residents, which there are now 30… there are spaces left, so if you haven’t been yet, go and have a look, Here is some information and keep a look out for some more of their activities, coming up in 2017! From special open days to monthly themed lunches and they’re really keen on working with local producers and businesses too.

I also hear, the old wooden hut at the garden centre will definitely be used for something they have in mind.... choo choo!
Don’t forget to look at our Events page on facebook for lots of things coming up over this next month.
