In January you will see The Main Deal website with a facelift, as mentioned in last week’s blog, I have to move with the world of IT and it’s trends which as we know, move very quickly.
So what’s been achieved in 2105?
I now have 72 members on The Main Deal with the website hitting 47,000 and social media pages having a huge weekly reach, which tells me people are seeing on The Main Deal first, what’s happening locally through lots of
I Did a presentation to year 12 students of Garforth Academy about what’s local
Did a presentation to NET computer workshop
Cross marketed local companies who are now working together; helped local companies bring in new business.
Giving a platform for community to see what’s local; slowly changing perceptions
Helped a new local company believe in themselves and that they could achieve their goal by putting them in touch with the right people to make their ideas into reality which is now bringing in new business.
Teaching businesses about social media and how to make it work better for their business
Through Garforth Hour I have helped Garforth in Bloom with several new plots being sponsored
Through Garforth Hour I have helped introduce local businesses to each other and helped let them see what’s also local.
TMD has helped publicise many events on and around Main Street such as Garforth Arts Festival, Fiveraffle, Christmas Lights.
I am in partnership with Arts Live after putting together the Local Garforth Community Choir
I have been part of the Christmas Committee and helped as part of a team to create a better Christmas Lights Night
I have helped with advertising local events and money has gone to Globe Not for Profit charity
There are lots of ideas I have as how I could help more of the community and local businesses for 2016, but it needs you to keep looking, sharing and liking #watchthisspace
As a very small business, Christmas office parties are somewhat, very different. There’s no big venue, no posh frock, no trying to talk to the big boss because now you’re a bit squiffy you have confidence to do so. No winking at people in your office that you wouldn’t normally, and no silly arms dancing in the air as you try to sing songs that you have made your own words up to. I don't miss any of it
Listening to a bit of Frank Sinatra and #partyingalone
On this note, I wish you all a very Happy, Merry and relaxing Christmas – be kind, be positive and make it your New Year’s resolution to support the place you live; make it a better place to live
The next blog will be on Friday 8th January 2016
Today is national Lost and Found day. What did you find... a new shop you’ve never been in before and did you get lost in it?
Lots of reviews booked in before Christmas, this is the part of my job I love, chatting with member and helping them to understand by also showing them how to get more out of their business by using the thing everybody else’s uses every day; social media and the internet.
I hold most of my meetings in Cielo. 1, it’s a little quieter upstairs and the seats are very comfy, you can hold a conversation and not disturb anyone else. 2. Any profits made by Cielo goes back into the community, so every time I bring someone in, I’m helping contribute to that fund.
It’s been an up and down week, this week, as many of you will know and understand owning your business there are lots of times you have to do things you really don’t like doing #awkward
I had a great meeting with Fiona from Leeds Libraries this week about how The Main Deal can show you, the community more of what goes on and what they do, how we can support them through technology why they get themselves out there with social media
What they do have which I never knew about; and I’m a regular library user. But they have this fabulous APP and you can download it for free, you can reserve a book, download eBooks for free, scan a barcode on any title and see if you can borrow it rather than buy it and lots more including events, opening times. Just type in LEEDS LIBRARIES in the search box.
Also moving with the times of technology, the Library will soon have something fabulous; the library staff are currently testing it first - it’s a fantastic Free Emagazine service, so you will be able to download them to your laptop, PC, Smartphone or Tablet, read them, keep them for free, no return date, no fines! HOW FANTASTIC is this going to be? #keepyoureyespeeled for further information about it in 2016.
Fiveraffle - funds raised
We had confirmation of monies raised through Fiveraffle; considering we had less time to sell tickets this year, just 2 weeks. We still managed to raise £400 that goes back into Main Street. As you will have noticed last year’s funds went to all the lovely little trees you will see inside shop windows making Main Street and some of the other shops round and about, look a little bit more Christmassy; On behalf of the Traders Association, thank you for your support, Garforth
#WOTS (word On the Street)
It has been confirmed that Klondyke are re-building a Garden Centre at the top of The Cliff, which is fabulous news. After a fair few months of worry and rumour about the land being used for houses, it’s nice to know that they were, just rumours.
After the umpteenth time this year of being at a standstill on Church Lane, I have sent an email to Highways at Leeds City Council, asking if there are any further developments as to what their plans are for this Road as earlier in the year I was told they were looking into it but no plan to a solution had yet, been made.
As I mentioned on an earlier blog, we all just need to be patient until this problem is rectified as everybody gets annoyed with it, buses, residents, people just using it to get to and from Main Street, there’s no-one to blame, we just need to get through it; literally until a plan has been made... I will keep you up to date with any progress
Nothing in planning this week, flats opposite the library still waiting approval
Garforth Lions Christmas Fair is on tomorrow morning - please support the good of Garforth
Garforth Flood Group’s Christmas Concert is tomorrow evening and Garforth Community Choir will be singing

The website has been busy this week, we're nearly at 47,000 hits to date, so it's looking good for the big 50,000 in January when The Main Deal gets a facelift #fingerscrossed
Both the Facebook and Twitter pages have also been very busy, I hope you've been liking my daily #adventcalender posts? Facebook this week has had a 6,803 weekly hit and Twitter has had 16,009 impressions
keep it local by looking here first
Buy local today and they stay
Dice Day! - Rolling, Dicing, Dice with....? -#youdecide
I welcome David Smith from Oblend this week, a new member to TMD - check out his website, a great young man who is extremely passionate about the love of blending in order to give us the good we need in our
lives https://www.oblend.co.uk/ local delivery in Garforth
I don’t know about you, but even in the rain for 7 hours, I thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas Lights Switch on, last Saturday. I think our Christmas Committee certainly worked and our steps in trying to make the event that was already good a little better worked. Hopefully after our meeting in January engaging with the committee and the feedback we will have all received and the people who have been involved like other traders, local councillors and The Garforth Lions, with the feedback we should be able to make 2016 even better.
As I stood on the stage to draw the Fiveraffle, I could see everyone and you were Subway deep with people waiting for the local boxer Josh Warrington and local school girl to switch on our lights. I stood back and then got dragged forward to do the countdown #fabulous I felt all warm and fuzzy; even though I was soaking wet.
The community spirit was wonderful and if you can all turn up in the wind and rain, then imagine how many more of you would be if there if the weather was on side?
Thank you everyone for shopping local, shopping with the stalls and supporting the good of Garforth; even when it was miserable, you weren’t.
Here are some great picture from our Fabulous Christmas Window Winners and a few more which were taken by Tony from Garforth Camera Club
The lucky winner of the Fiveraffle was a lovely local lady from Kippax called Maureen Wheelhouse - pictured here with Karen from Ladycares
She was over the moon. She said, ‘Oh my goodness I never win anything, I can’t believe it, I’ll have to sit down’
Thank you to all of you who bought a ticket, and not only has one lucky winner won, but all the money raised will go back into Main Street. Supporting local and having fun all at the same time
It’s SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY tomorrow – a national day for us all to support local businesses
So when you're out and about Garforth #shoppinglocal, don't forget it's Garforth In Bloom Christmas Fair in the Miners Welfare Hall tomorrow too - support the good that give us great things all year round
LIDL – is coming! They will no doubt have to put it through planning again as I suspect they will not be wanting the whole of Miami, it’s massive and it’s unlikely they will be requiring a petrol station – as I always say, we’ll know when it’s built and the sign goes up what and where it's happening
As much as I wasn’t for another supermarket; I just think we need one bigger and better one, I think a Lidl will actually compliment what's already here and hopefully not detract too much from local businesses in and around Main Street.
Netto – not sure if the confirmation that Lidl will be arriving will change their minds about putting their shop at the top of Town End! Again, we’ll just have to wait and see. They have said they will notify me when their plans are put in! #watchthisspace
Lots of rumours this week about Wetherspoons, as I always find out in my job, lots of people think they are the oracles of Garforth and know everything that goes on... even I don’t know everything that goes on and certainly don’t pretend I do in order to start rumours, sometimes it’s impatience that starts stories
Fact – there are few things left to be signed and sorted through planning, so no, Wetherspoons haven’t pulled out
I'm looking forward to seeing the newly re-furbished Firthfields Playground - they are hoping to have it all finished before the Christmas holidays #playlocal
The Main Deal is nearly a year old and will be having a facelift in January - I have to move with the IT trends and make sure you're all still coming on board, watching, listening and reading, I might even make 50,000 hits before then as I today I reach 45,600 hits......
BUY LOCAL OR BYE LOCAL
My name is Christine Thom, I came to live in Garforth 18 years ago; you may have seen me around ?
