Happy April! Can you believe how quickly the months are passing by? Despite the calendar saying it’s spring, the weather seems determined to keep us in winter mode. I came across a post yesterday that perfectly captured the sentiment: “If it gets any colder, I’m seriously considering putting my Christmas tree back up!” It seems like Mother Nature can’t make up her mind, and to add insult to injury, there’s rain forecasted for next week—just in time for my week off, typical!

And don’t even get me started on this whole daylight-saving time nonsense. Instead of feeling like I’m springing forward, it just leaves me feeling groggy and disoriented for a week.  But enough complaining, let’s focus on brighter things, they’ve also said that temperatures are heating up ‘in April’ and so good, they have also offered advice on the old pollen warning – EVERY BOX ticked!

As mentioned during our recent monthly Vlog, Pound Shop Plus has secured tenancy at the former location of Dorothy Anne’s. Undoubtedly, this new shop will spark varied opinions within the Garforth community, but then again, what doesn’t! I believe this addition could offer welcome relief to some individuals’ budgets, especially given the ongoing challenges of living in a costly country where expenses seem to never end.

However, we must also consider the viewpoints of Garforth’s so-called “50p millionaires” – those who perceive themselves as wealthier than their peers. They are often quick to critique new additions to the high street, yet rarely frequent such establishments themselves. It’s a familiar refrain: questioning the necessity of another bar or restaurant while never stepping foot inside one.

My primary concern lies with the potential impact on existing businesses, particularly those in the DIY sector. I hope Pound Shop Plus seamlessly integrates into the community landscape, alleviating the burden of vacant premises. Ultimately, the goal is for this new addition to contribute positively to Garforth’s economic vitality while respecting the livelihoods of its existing independents.
