The parking of cars around Garforth
I’m sure we can all empathise with the persistent parking challenges we face along Garforth’s residential streets. The situation appears to have intensified due to the growing number of individuals obtaining their driver’s licenses, acquiring their own vehicles, and ‘having’ to stay in their family homes due to affordability constraints. The situation has become even more unlikely for young people to move out anytime soon with the recent increase in interest rates.
It is worth applauding those who have managed to secure their own homes before the age of 30, as it is no small feat in the current housing climate.
As well as the above, we also have more cars that come with newly built homes, and even more on the way with developments at Silverwood, still under construction.
The ‘problem’ of parked cars in Garforth – is not the volume, but the management of our roads, there’s no point complaining about the traffic and how many cars there are in our town, but a solution as to the possibilities and how we can come up with a plan to our parking issues.
‘Some’ of the busy commuter roads causing traffic issues’
Church Lane – the most used commute to Main Street is with a 20mph speed limit (no one does this because they have to put their foot down to get passed parked cars before more cars arrive) Intermittent yellow lines (see below) would help allowing passing points.
Fairburn Drive – People parking on bends, only single driveways for newer homes, more cars per household hold (as above) Intermittent yellow lines
Main Street – has 2 lots of yellow lines which causes a bottleneck, with buses and delivery trucks (and people that can’t navigate a busy road both behind the wheel and on foot) It would be far better to have one side only with yellow lines, allowing for disabled spaces and deliveries.
Hazelwood Road – People parking for the doctors, as buses enter this narrow residential street – disabled parking bays only outside the doctors
Lidgett Lane – Traffic lights at the end, they’re currently on green for just 7 seconds, (sad I know this) if they just extended this to 14 seconds, it would probably make a difference
Ninelands Lane the section running parallel to Glebelands recreational ground, to try and solve an ongoing problem that occurs day and night on this road, yesterday I sent a report to LCC which may be the simple and cost-effective way of managing this Road that makes us use expletives! If this works, could we do the others mentioned?

Ninelands Lane poses a challenge when cars begin parking on the road once the designated car park is full, making it difficult for the moving traffic to pass through smoothly. While it seems unlikely that LCC would invest in significant changes like road widening or cut-out bays, perhaps a simpler and more cost-effective solution could be implemented. Have you considered the feasibility of installing intermittent yellow lines along the road? Having two car lengths of yellow lines after every four parked cars, which would create designated passing zones, ensuring a continuous flow of traffic and maintaining the desired speed limit of 20 mph. This solution may offer an effective compromise while addressing the congestion issue on Ninelands Lane
If everybody makes a similar suggestion/observation then something could change – Go directly to the source of change rather than asking someone else to delegate it.

On the subject of traffic, nighttime driving around Garforth can have its problems, my son has just passed his test (his car is on a drive) and he has found ‘absolute arseholes” in his words, making risky and dangerous maneuvers whilst driving at speed.
