Welcome to May. The flowers are out, the barbecues are coming back, and Garforth has just done what Garforth does, made its decision, some raised an eyebrow. Some are thrilled. Some are decidedly less so. All’s not well in everyone’s band camp – we’ll spare you the body language
Anyhoo – let’s move on
The Yard Sale
Well done to Eco Friendly for organising the first Yard Sale over the Bank Holiday weekend. What a brilliant start to something I really hope grows and grows within the community.
Such a simple but really good idea, a map showing homes and garages where people were selling items they no longer use, but that could still be reused, repurposed, upcycled or appreciated by someone else instead of ending up thrown away.
Every little really does help, especially when we all need to play our part in looking after the planet we live on. We buy the stuff, so we also need to take a bit more responsibility for what happens to it when we no longer want or need it.
And let’s be honest, one person’s clutter is another person’s “I’ve been looking for one of those for ages” 😄
Happy 100th Birthday David Attenborough
Rumour has it
There was rumour that a business was going to take on the old CLO building but it seems they have pulled out at the last minute – I hope it gets taken on soon, but the monthly rent is off the scale!
And no, there is no more evidence to say ether TOFS old building or SENSE old building have been taken up by anyone either.
FEASTIVAL Read our socials here https://bit.ly/48RaGu5
You may, or may not have seen across our local social media pages that we’ve sadly had to make the decision to cancel Garforth Community Feastival going forward – we had to be fair to our stalls, it’s really not just a simple, let’s move it somewhere else.
This decision came completely out of the blue, and took us entirely by surprise.
After years of successfully organising and delivering the event for the community, the reasons given to us simply DO NOT make sense whatsoever, especially when Feastival has always been carefully planned, managed responsibly and supported local businesses, residents and the wider community.
The reasoning for suddenly not allowing the use of the leisure centre car park doesn’t quite stack up. We were told the car park couldn’t possibly be used for Feastival, just in case it upsets members between 8am and 12pm on a Saturday, as they wouldn’t want to lose users even though we make sure the other car park (1 minute walk away is free to use) and there’s never been any issues before!
So when I found out that yesterdays, classes space was used for voting between the times of 7 am and 10pm it naturally leaves us a few questions, and ones that deserve proper answers.
Holding the Feastival on that car park has never stopped people using the leisure centre. It’s been planned, managed and delivered successfully before, without issue. WITHOUT ISSUE
This isn’t about causing drama. It’s about understanding why something that has worked for years, bringing community, footfall and support to local businesses, suddenly became a problem.
Especially when the we, the people organising it do so voluntarily, giving up huge amounts of time and energy for the benefit of the community and local independent businesses.
