For Pete’s Sake – celebrates one example of a ‘minced oath’, where an offensive word or phrase is substituted by something more acceptable in society. Other examples include ‘For crying out loud!’, and ‘Sugar!’. Such euphemisms have been used for centuries whenever people hit thumbs with hammers, burn hands on hot plates, or sit on sharp things while in polite company. Why has Pete been singled out for special attention?
In the case of this particular minced oath, Pete is likely to refer to St Peter. However, if there’s a Pete in your life, why not do something for his sake? It doesn’t have to be much – making him a cup of tea or a nice sandwich would be good!
If you are Pete-less, perhaps you can celebrate by saying ‘For Pete’s Sake’ whenever you get an opportunity.

What did you get up to locally? It seems the Leeds Library Fest went down a storm across the whole of the city, I suspect due to its success, they will be doing it again in other school holidays times, keep a look out.
Talking about Library’s do you know what goes in ours? It’s so 21st century with regards to technology, not only is there no stamping in books (well maybe the odd one or two) but not longer can you lose your little ticket you used to have as everything is electronic, as well as the App which allows you to Search the catalogue for books, find a library, check your account, eBooks, social media sites, ask questions and council news. Just put, Leeds Library and Information services in your APP section and ‘get it’

Pride and Produce have been busy meeting local suppliers this week including tasting sessions and I will be looking forward to popping in to see the ladies next week and see how they’re coming on with the shop fit.
Joan’s is moving to Kippax in March, so some good sale items to be had. I hear on the grapevine, Henry Lax already has someone lined up to move in, but not sure of who yet, either way, it means a shop won’t be closed for long. #eartotheground
Key’s on the street; well paper ones. There have been lots of paper keys that were meant to be distributed on behalf of Dobson’s Estate Agents but it appears they’re all over the place and not either being posted or hung on doors! #unhappypeople and probably an annoyed Mike Dobson!
Planning
I put an email to Nick Borras, Principal Engineer of Traffic Management East LCC before Christmas only to receive an email this week! My email was to ask about Church Lane, and chase what their actions are after their obvious knowledge about how terrible it is and like I have mentioned in the past how it annoys everyone, including the people that live on Church Lane. My question was to ask whether they were prepared to spend money SOON doing something as it’s now become apparent that people are actually not coming into Main Street because of it!
This was his reply
Sincere apologises for the delay in responding to your original email regarding parking on Church Lane.
Church Lane is one of the main routes through the Garforth area and I fully appreciate that the on street parking that occurs along here creates a multitude of problems in terms of the free flow of traffic.
We have looked at this issue not just recently but in previous years following similar complaints and a seemingly easy way to resolve the problems would be to introduce formal parking restrictions, however as we have found in other areas of Garforth this doesn’t necessarily resolve the problem altogether, it simply displaces the parking to other areas and the problems are resurrected, which I know is a concern of Councillor Dobson.
Also, as part of any formal Traffic Regulation Order process there is a requirement to carry out consultation of any directly affected properties/premises and a legal requirement to formally advertise any proposals on street via a notice, of which both processes allow the residents and the general public the option to voice their opinions either supporting the proposals or objecting. I have no doubt that those residents on Church Lane, who would be subjected to formal parking restrictions outside their property, would object be that during the consultation stage or formally via the legal advertisement process.
I appreciate that the large majority of the residential properties fronting Church Lane have off street parking of some form and as Councillor Dobson stated some residents have a back road that can be used by some residents, but I am afraid that the residents cannot be forced to use the off street parking provision, without formally restricting the parking provision, which would lead us back to the objections from the local residents.
I am more than happy to review the situation once again and include a scheme on our works programme to be assessed for funding during the 2016/17 financial year.
It may take me a few days to reply with what I plan to do next!
As I type I am listening to BBC Radio Leeds as in their #hotseat today is Alec Shelbrooke talking about Garforth parking problems and a possible Park and Ride scheme up at Peckfield so of course I have got on the back of their tweets and trying to get into their programme. #noluck with engaging them!
Their local reporter, Richard Edwards has been out on Main Street today speaking to a few residents, both of which had some great things to say. Michelle was talking about the parking issues and how, lots of cars park in main street carparks and then get the train, and with perhaps more restrictions on all car parks, it could help local shoppers and businesses, otherwise if local people can’t park, they’ll go elsewhere. Richard also spoke to Karen Butler a local resident of Garforth, who has lived here for the last 4-5 years and she had some wonderful things to say about Garforth, and what a great place it is and yes, I agree with her comments, she would also like to see more places to go, like restaurants and better places to drink.
As I always say in many posts, if you shop and create a buzz, others will want to be part of that buzz

I hear the a solicitors are wanting to convert the house next to the Library and are coming under problems from neighbours having issues over the change, so we’ll see if that is allowed to go ahead!
The Vets that were hoping to come to Fusion Court have been knocked back due to parking issues as a lot of us know, there isn’t enough parking in Fusion Court and therefore there is a now an overflow on Aberford Road which of course is annoying residents and road users; as Streetlife mentions! So as a Vet’s would need a fair few spaces and there would be people carrying pets in, I ‘think’ this is the reason for the decline from planning.
Lidl – still in planning, no sign of application going through just yet. I’ve heard, on the grapevine, the family pub will more than likely be a Harvester or Toby Carvery….!
