However, I think we had a lucky escape. Friends and family from the North West seemed to have had it much worse, with tiles coming off the roof and glass being broken, I also hear Leeds had a few issues, I saw we nearly had new swimming pool down the lines, but overall not too bad in Garforth, and today, I think, thanks to Doris, we’ve had beautiful sunny day #bringmesunshine
What happens when you take a week off!
I had a lovely week off, a visit to The Lakes and some much needed time playing about and doing boy stuff with my sons. I think I’ll let them do the climbing though!
Anyway…..
Public Health came to Garforth with a serious incident of someone being hospitalised. No, it’s not great as I hear there were many who were ill, and I believe the place in question had the necessary inspectors in to sort the problem out; and they never closed! It was a pain that at the time, the information that was passed around came with little description. Not sure what it achieved by only giving little clues, only to give some people in Garforth the need for speculation and giving Inspector Clouseau a run for his money, and then came the finger pointing! In my book, this makes things worse. I had to put out a disclaimer to shout for the local independents as the incident had nothing to do with them. Say it all or nothing at all!
There appears to have been a fair few burglaries in the area too, social media does have it’s values here as it can inform me people to take care and be more vigilant. I know the local constabulary have arrested one male, but there still must be a few sods out there, as it’s still happening. Don’t ever be complacent, lock doors and windows even when you’re inside the house.
Last week, we also saw our 2 local Counsellors leave the Labour party and they have now set up a new Independent party. Should you wish for more information, you can follow them on their new social media pages.

The new Fruit and Veg shop, which I’m still yet to learn more about. One minute it was coming, next there was rumour it wasn’t and now it’s clear they’re setting up home in the old LadyCares shop. I love choice and independents, I just hope they’re bringing something a little different that we don’t already have so it can sit nicely with existing traders; I’m all for harmony
We’ve also had enquiries from the ladies at Gymophobics which opens on the 20th March, they were originally going to open on the 6th March, but to get it just right and how they want it, they’ve moved the date. The ladies are fairly local and want this to be a great success. Well I must say, the new Weatherspoon’s, The Briggate is looking rather swanky, someone said it seemed a bit upper class for Garforth! Really, I know the décor is nice, but come on, I’m not going to ever agree that Weatherspoon’s is up there with, the upper class!
The beer gardens will be great in the summer months, giving Main Street a really great vibe, I’m hoping the big positives will be the extra footfall for the high street. But please remember, we still do have other fabulous local independents in and on our high street, so as much as everyone and his dog will be in there for a nosy and an offer, don’t forget to keep supporting all our other local pubs, cafés and restaurants., we would never want to see a new place open and 3 close! Let’s hope it doesn’t bring any trouble either – local PCSO’s will be on it
It’s also great we will have more choice, and I;m all for choice as I have a feeling The Briggate will also bring a market for other new business ventures to come on in. Here’s hoping for more independents on our high street,… Oh and for all the people who didn’t want it, see you at the bar?
Great to hear this afternoon that the WASPI (Women Against Pension State Inequality) event at Cielo was a real success. A lady from the group came to me some weeks ago as they wanted to hold an event to help other local women before their big demo in London on the 8th March, and also Made in Leeds where interested in filming. So I put them in touch with Cielo and today along with some fabulous help from Vicki and Matt, Elaine from WASPI said;
‘It’s been an amazing success with lots of interest and new recruits and an invitation to WI of Garforth to go speak there. Matt and staff at Cielo were fantastic too so a big thanks to all concerned. We will be on TV on 8th March to coincide with our London Demo. So proud to be a Garforth lady Christine and thanks again. I have emailed Vicki as well to thank her and conveyed our thanks to Matt and his team too who were brilliant ‘

Hitting the trail…
Getting outdoors is one of my favourite things to do. I used to like hiking in Canada – there were lots of beautiful mountain trails where I come from (Vancouver). Although the terrain is quite different in Yorkshire, we live in a beautiful part of the world here too.
We’re excited to explore our back garden on the many walking trails around us, and to make sure we can do this with baby T we invested in a good baby backpack.
After doing our research online, we decided on an Ospery Poco Premium pack, ordered from Little Trekkers in Sheffield. It has a sunshade, raincover, detachable daypack and additional storage, and is quite comfortable (no problems on a practice walk around Roundhay Park). Baby T looked really comfortable as well.
We also purchased a few Ordnance Survey maps from Winfields on Selby Road (next to Garforth Garden Centre) and are planning a few outings now that the worst of the winter weather is (hopefully) behind us.

As I mentioned a few blogs back, there was a rumour that, The Bird in Hand was to be taken over by a Greek restaurant, but according to my sources, the people that own the Greek restaurant in Cross Gates have only been to look around, so we’re still yet to see if anything happens, nothing is in planning as of yet.
Sad to hear that Mia’s Nails and Beauty salon will be leaving Chapel Lane at the end of this month. Mia and Tuan are really lovely people and like most independent businesses, have tried to give it a go here in Garforth, their industry, falling under beauty is in a very heavy industry we all know it, the umbrella of hair, beauty and barbers falls under 28 in the whole of Garforth, so they always had the added weight of being seen in the market. Social media is key to being seen no matter what industry you’re in. If you’re not consistent with it nobody hears or sees you. I wish them both luck in their next adventure, whatever that may be.
