Embrace your friends, they know too much about you to fall out with them
As always the first week back after school hols is always busy and, admin work demands attention, I’m needing to finalise my accounts for Business Works, my accountant. I like to get them in as soon as I can as it’s another year done.
500 people have heard of it, have you? #Garforthrocks – Garforth Rocks has been created by the lovely, Sam Whitley, a local lady who you will have seen working in most of our local cafe’s and, The Gin Shack; she’s the funny one who you can hear laughing for miles.
Sam says,
“Welcome to Garforth Rocks. Following on from successful groups around the country I thought it would be nice to bring some of the fun to Garforth.
If you have found a rock post a picture of either you and the rock or just the rock on this page with a description of where it was found. This will help the person who decorated it see how far the rock has travelled. Then either keep the rock or re hide it elsewhere.
If you want to take part then the idea is to decorate rocks, and hide them in various locations to brighten someone’s day. Make sure to seal your masterpiece with sealer and write on the back of your creation…” Facebook #Garforth Rocks. Keep or Re-hide”. Then hide your rock.
This is meant to be fun for every one of all ages and abilities. Get creative and get outside =)
Remember to be respectful of private property and businesses.”
Here’s how to get involved
Next Thursday, 14th June, it’s Coffee and cupcake day in aid of, Alzheimer’s Society – I’m hosting a cake and coffee day in my home with some friends and family. My Granddad had early onset Dementia and I saw him change so much, it was such a sad few years for all of our family, and like any charity, if we can raise funds to help find a prevention and do so by eating cake, being with friends, laughing and enjoying life; which is always good for the mind, then we should get involved. I’m also adding the theme of #Garforthrocks. My dining room table will be full of rocks (bought from Pease) with Sharpies so people can create, colour and do something positive with their mind. I will let you know how much we raise and how many cakes we have eaten, next week. If we raise just £50 if would pay for a communication tool that uses symbols rather than words to help people with advanced dementia communicate.
This week I closed the doors on Garforth Hour. After 3 and half years of tweeting hours, it was losing it’s momentum and it didn’t feel productive anymore. Earlier in the year, I changed it to GarforthLife and to once a month to try and engage people more, but unfortunately I think it has just come to it’s natural end. The initial idea was to engage businesses and get them using and understanding twitter, which it did.. In that time we’ve been lucky enough to see great success, so many businesses working together, cross marketing. We had several businesses who took up sponsorship with Garforth In Bloom and I’m proud to say the initial idea for Garforth Feastival came from Garforth Hour, so it certainly had it’s day, and a successful time it was.
However, all is not totally lost, I am supporting the networking event, A friend of friend which is run my Michelle Roberts who owns Savings and Scents, and she and a friend, run a monthly meet up at Cielo from 9.30am in the morning, the next one is Friday 15th June, and I have been invited to come along and to do a talk about social media and The Main Deal, I promise, if I’ m talking for too long, just show me some cake! Everyone is welcome to attend, community and businesses.

Tonight, Gin Friday as usual at Quirky’s tonight with Rebecca at The Gin Shack
Tonight – Arts Live Take over At Chapel FM – Garforth Community Choir will be singing their hearts out at this Live event tonight, I will be attending as my Son is also in one of the Arts Lives Rock Band. It will be recorded and live streamed so I will also be sharing it live on FB this evening. Local people, great talent #thomboyrocks
Saturday 9th June – Garforth In Bloom Summer Fair please go along tomorrow morning and show your support for these wonderful volunteers
Saturday, 9th June – Luke Flear will be playing at The New Inn in Barwick from 9pm – local pubs showing great local talent – well he is from Barwick but Garforth adopted him a long time ago

Planning
I’m saddened to read that the proposed bar that applied for planning on Chapel Close has been refused. A small independent bar, that would be sophisticated, bring in new clientele to Garforth and would, most certainly, be the catalyst of new businesses wanting to be part of our night time vibe. I find it frustrating that massive corporate companies which create more traffic, noise and pollution seem to glide in… Does money talk?
We need to get the balance right and thus far, we are tipping over on large corporate companies. Why be like every other town?
Onward and upwards, I’ll see how we can get these guys into Garforth, mission no. 465
