Mental Health Awareness Week
This week it’s been about making others aware of Mental Health – It’s good to talk, it’s better to listen. Smile at strangers, hug your friends, you can truly have a great impact on people’s lives when they feel people care. If you also let them know that you are always there when they find things tough, it would be a real support knowing you could help, whether it’s a friend, a work colleague or a partner. I find if you don’t necessarily worry about things like others do, you find it hard to understand. I worry about very little, I don’t get stressed very often and I try to always look at the positives in life, even when there’s negativity standing right in front of me; there 1 or 2! So I see myself as lucky and try to give my time to others which in turn makes me understand better.
The Springs open
Listening to Leeds-Live on Facebook Live this week, they interviewed Simon Marshall, Joint chief Executive of Scarborough International Properties, developers of The Springs.
As an independent business supporter, of course I am concerned about the novelty period that usually happens when something new opens and how this short period of interest will affect our town. We don’t have a lot of independent retailers in Garforth, we always strive for more, but sadly, without success, as landlords prefer to fill empty premises with chain or franchise companies or duplication’s! As The Springs are more about retail, I can’t see it impacted on us too much, it’s mainly our food and drink offerings that may see more of an impact; especially as there seems to be lots of people getting over excited about Nandos, a posh KFC…In my opinion! Let’s hope it doesn’t detract from our wonderful town too much..
In the interview with Simon, he announced a few things. In 2023 we will see the opening of the East Leeds Train Station, which will take 6 minutes to get into Leeds. He has also said, there will soon be an announcement of other retailers coming to fill those empty premises., “Many more to come, in keeping with the quality of what’s already here, and people will be really pleased with what’s coming next; some high quality stores.” “Gino’s opens on the 26th October, rumours Gino will be there to the opening.” The Link Road will open up in December accessing the M1
The Odean Cinema is the biggest one outside of Leicester Square, a 10 screen cinema with reclining seats. Thorpe Park as a whole employees just over four and half thousand people – which is one of the good things it brings as it also brings apprenticeships; let’s hope that most of these are locally sourced.
I am certainly pleased about the Cinema opening, especially for the #Thomboys growing up. I like growth if it works. I suppose it does mean our carbon footprint will bet better as we can get all we need from Garforth and now here at, The Springs..

A tour will run every half an hour to explain the archaeology, show some of the finds and allow you to ask the archaeologists questions. It is advised that sturdy footwear and sensible clothing is recommended. Planning
Nice to finally hear that Westwood Veterinary practice will move into their new premises this weekend and will open on Monday 15th October – If you don’t know, they are moving into the new building behind The Fly Line – Good luck everyone.
I read there’s an application for two proposed flats to go in the white building in Chapel Close; because we don’t have enough residential buildings in Garforth! It was a shame that the proposed idea of the sophisticated bar idea was knocked back!
I hear there were a few potential buyers also investigating the building of the old hair salon, Te Amo on Fairburn Drive this week, but nothing in planning so far, only local people gossiping about a takeout!
