What’s on – Don’t let the rain put you off enjoying local – it’s easier to get home
- Friday 14th – FEW GIFTS LAUNCH their new gift shop and art hub – Well I have shouted about it a lot this week, but I am so excited about it opening and the fact we have so many local Garforth businesses, artists and Yorkshire folk working together – it’s like music to my ears. I will see you there, joining in the celebrations with, Sticks and Stones playing, Cakes by Julia’s Cakes and Bakes and Gin from The Gin Shack – come and have a go at a potter’s wheel and come and meet some of great local talented artists and their wares along with some local sellers – bring your wallet as you don’t know what you might want to buy (they are near Tesco’s, opposite the softplay centre, Kidzone, they are on the right, you can’t miss the bright pink signage)
- Friday and Saturday night at Cielo 7.00-11.00pm – As they now have their alcohol license and serving some wonderful choice of drinks including a expresso Martini – which I can personally vouch, is darn delicious.
- Friday Night from 5.00-9.00pm– The Gaping Goose – Great Drinks offers and The Pizza Box Company will also be there too, to fill those bellies.
- Saturday 15th June – Lotherton Hall Wartime Weekend with Miss Marina Mae – 10.00-4.00pm – if you’re a member, entry is free www.misssmarinamae.co.uk – she specialises in songs from the 20’s right through to the 60’s – I know where I will be!
- Saturday 15th June 3.00pm at Garforth Methodist Church – Garforth RNLI invite you to Garforth Ukulele Players – Tickets are £5 and include Tea/Coffee and Cakes – tickets are available from the library but I’m sure you will also be able to pay on the door too.
- Sunday June 16th – Messy Play – Life’s a beach from 11.00am-12.00pm at St Benedict’s Parish Centre
- Tuesday 18th June Carte E Cart at The Station House Café with Nic Baker from Stampin’ up Demonstrator These sessions at the very lovely Station House are becoming increasingly more popular .You can drop in and make a handmade Carta (card) and have a hot or cold bere (drink) either as you craft or before / after – it’s your choice! This is a leisurely and social session where you can drop in any time between 9.30 and 11 am to make your card/s. All materials to complete your card/s along with any guidance / support will be provided. Hot drinks can be ordered from the cafe. It will take around half an hour to complete your card so please allow enough time. Why not bring a friend and craft as you chat?
Planning
I put a post out this week about how I am trying to influence what comes to our town to make Garforth a place people want to be. If something comes in planning and I believe it will work, I will whole heartily support and push for it to happen; here’s why
I am just waiting to hear from the owners of the new proposed cocktail bar for 40 Main Street. I am very much behind this idea, and these are the reasons why;
- Our offering of a place to be is what needs to happen to give our town a sustainable future, any towns future.
- Online shopping is becoming more and more of a threat to high streets, so by building a place where people want to spend time, this in turn, makes people want to spend money locally, it’s a knock on effect.
- I have done my homework and met with the owners, and their plans are truly wonderful, the concept is not just another cafe, nor a place to get too inebriated, their day time and night time vibe will be very different and not a duplication, we cannot compare them to what is already here.
- As much as we could have done with retail in the past, this would now not work as well with having The Springs on the doorstep, and I also feel we may see some changes in our supermarket very soon.
- As we grow in housing development, (this is happening and we have no control over it), so we want to encourage Garforth as a place people want to spend time in.
- This proposed cafe/bar will also be an independent, this, we always want to encourage to keep the balance. If you take a look at Chapel Allerton and Moortown, they have a variety of places people want to eat, drink, meet friends, socialise and spend time. We need this in Garforth.
- The likes of Philip Green’s empire, Top Shop etc and Big Department stores have left moving with the times, too late. Online has taken their trade. They didn’t make their shops a place people wanted to be nor give them an experience. We can’t afford for this to happen in our local town, and having more places to go to will work on a smaller scale of creating an experience for our town, it creates a buzz other people want to be part of.
- I’m in the age bracket between 35-45 where people want to spend time in their own town and not necessarily go into the city centre – it means we can go out, enjoy local and even bring our families together.
- We also have another proposed restaurant in planning, and I will also be supporting this. Garforth needs to be here for people spending time, locally. This is where local money gets spent, which in turn, helps our local economy.
More good news in planning and as a franchise, I will be backing – Agents for Clip and Climb have put in a planning application, to go into the empty premises near Homebase, this, I think would work really well here in Garforth and something fun and leisure that we’ve all been screaming for. I have sent an email to the agent in support and will be adding it to planning too.
I have been talking to Jo at the Station House Café too this afternoon –oooooo now this is going to be good – keep following for more good news. Don’t forge the super delicious menu in the day, great for a friends get together with a Prosecco perhaps!
