I don’t believe in Friday 13th, walking under ladders, black cats and all that – she says as a tin of paint falls on her head and cat, walks past and trips her up!      Are you superstitious?   Do you believe in bad luck?

I’ve had a lovely week this week, seeing people, shaking hands, TikTok hand signing and elbowing, fist-bumping and hip humps, as well as a few hugs…. and then, wash hands and sanitize.  It’s a good job, Refill & Go have hand sanitizer to buy, as seen as the supermarket shelves are empty because of all the selfish little buggers who have been buying, several bottles at a time!  By the way, no amount of toilet roll, paracetamol (yes drugs) or hand sanitizer you buy, will keep you away from a possible virus;  well, unless you stay at home, wrap yourself up like a mummy, douse yourself in hand sanitizer and drug yourself silly….! Not promoting, just an option for the people who are thinking of themselves! And I’m not promoting more panic, but shopping local can actually do you a favour, as we see more of our local companies such as Pease and Refill & Go, stock up on the panic purchases; just saying!

After the release of information after the Budget this week, it was nice to read that local business will be able to get business rate suspension, which will hopefully see them ride through the eye of the storm; should it arrive!  It has always been needed for quite some time, businesses have been shouting for long enough about, rent and rates relief.  Our local businesses can really struggle with these and it can be a lot to pay out before they even start to earn anything.  Hopefully, we will see businesses able to breathe a sigh relief as it allows them to ride the waves more easily.  Owning a local business can be really difficult, especially over the quiet months, like the ones that have just passed.  January and February are nightmare months, so it’s up to us to help – everything has a knock-on effect,   We buy local, the shop stays, we create a buzz, more of what we want comes along, our house prices stay nice!  If we buy locally more, than the rates and rent aren’t a big issue.

I had a lovely meeting with Garforth Planning forum this week, they are a lovely team who are extremely knowledgeable about all the in’s and out’s of planning, now and in the future for our town and they’re on it!  They will be doing something very important over the next few months, and they will need your input.  I will be sharing all the information as soon as it comes to light so you can be part of helping make decisions, it’s a real pity we are not a parish council as we would have more say, but this will be as close as we can get in having some input about what goes on it our town. I am planning to do a podcast with the team at a later date which will reveal more about their plans that I can share with you.

Talking of Podcasts, I have been with Luigi and Jo at the Station House Cafe this morning, recording for next week’s podcast that will be released next Wednesday, The Station House is such a lovely place to be, eat and drink.  You will be able to find out what’s on offer and what they do; you’ll be surprised how many people still haven’t paid them a visit.  They cater to everyone,  meat, Vegetarian and Vegan-friendly.  Don’t forget to listen to this week’s podcast too, click on the link to listen to our Chat with Clare Thornton of Thornton Jones solicitors https://www.themaindeal.co.uk/2020/03/10/thornton-jones-solicitors-with-claire-thornton/

Planning

The Leeds City Council, Public access page has been down today, so not able to see any new planning applications,  but what I can tell you, some time ago plans were approved that once the old Garage was knocked down opposite the library, there were plans for a few flats and a couple more shop premises, according to the Garforth Planning Forum, this is still going on and they have more or less cleared the site, I think some new shops down there could be a really great thing!

Over the next few weeks, we may go through some unpredictable times, we don’t know what will happen and let’s not try to guess. Data released late yesterday revealed that in Leeds, there were 7 cases of people who had contracted coronavirus out of 789,194 – lets read the facts, not the hype!  I will be here, always, sharing the information with you as soon as it comes in.  I have sent an email today to all our members asking them to keep posting and sharing with me, so I can share with you of any changes, products coming,  when they’re open and closed,  to help you, even more, stay on top of what’s going on locally.  Local will be a great lifeline, now more than ever, should you need to work from home, or schools close.

You can comment on our blog below, I would love to have your feedback, kind if possible but constructive, welcome.

Until then, wash your hands and TikTok or fist bump your way to next week
