This time last week was 75 years of VE Day. Our street was lovely, most people adhered to the guidelines and stayed in their gardens, or spoke to neighbours down the road keeping the rule of social distancing, it was something new to do, I quite liked the fact we had lunch and dinner (a bbq) in the front garden and it didn’t feel weird or wrong. May we do this more, when more things are lifted, and we can enjoy watching our children play in the front as we continue to chat to our neighbours, and not necessarily over the fence. Now our exercise time has been lifted a little, last night, we went on a family walk shortly after Thursday’s 8 pm clapping time, which has come to help us know what day it is and to use it to count another week gone by. What I noticed was after this time, some neighbours stayed out and chatted with each for much longer, some until 8.30pm, it was lovely to see, another thing I think we should continue, just talk more to the people that live next to us or down the road.
However, after Sundays’ briefing from BoJo, we were all scratching our heads, after he announced we could do some things but not all things, a few, but then not, we could go out, but not out, out! It confused a lot of small businesses, as they had been left in the dark as to when they can re-open. I know a lot of our local businesses are trying really hard to get their businesses ready to be safe, usable and workable for all. A lot of the businesses have had to wait for information to be released this week from government and other sources, such as their insurance companies. So I was glad to receive a message from our local dog groomers to say, Winston could be booked in at the end of May, with very strict guidelines in place, I was elated, as Winston looks like a stray dog after our very own home attempt of grooming; which sounds wrong in itself. So I have forewarned our dog groomer the state he is in, she will either laugh or cry! Here’s looking forward to a better looking dog at the end of the month.
Homeschooling is getting better, as we’re not doing all academic studies. The Thomboys have been on many bike rides and runs found new walks locally, made many cakes, made many things, tried sewing, crafting, art, music and DJ-ing, creating new music with some great software, programming, cleaning, and growing hair like a 1970’s child wearing a Donkee jacket! It’s all fun. I’m quite sure that my children will not be going back to school until September, so here’s to many more months of spinning lots of plates. I was told only last week, it is ok to put one or two plates down for a while. We need to look after ourselves too which I’m totally rubbish at. It may be the reason I’m going grey quickly, or is this just lockdown locks?

I have really enjoyed doing them and speaking to our local businesses and finding out how they’re getting on has been fun. Well done to Garforth Fire Station this week, running to raise money for the NHS. I believe the total was in excess of £3,600 a brilliant figure for our local firemen all running half a marathon each! I love the fact they were running to raise money for the NHS, but they are also keyworkers themselves, they very rarely get a mention when people talk about keyworkers – so well done. You always have our back and it was nice to see that Garforth had yours.

I was glad to be able to go onto the Self Employment Income support scheme today and apply for help. Like many local businesses, income has been very little or nothing, for some. So this has really helped, certainly keeping my head above the water.
