Yeah, the 17th May is within arm’s reach, we can feel it, we can smell it and we’ll soon be able to taste it, as we see our favourites open their doors again and hopefully, never to close ever again. Lots of our local restaurants, cafes, and pubs serving food are getting booked up quite quickly, so get yourself booked in as soon as possible, especially if you’re wanting a weekend feast.
Storm..zy over Leeds
Wow, what great weather we had on Tuesday evening, it timed it so well; just as most people were going to bed! It was the strangest, but coolest of storms. I love a good scream from mother nature, but they can be really unnerving, and exciting all at once. As much as a storm can be fun to listen to, and knowing the rain is helping farmers and our gardens, a fair few people had flood problems, including poor Scott at Refill & Go. I had just parked up to do my weekly shop, and there he was at the back of his shop bringing stock out, some he had managed to save, but some had to be thrown away, his store floor was completely saturated. I felt helpless, and really should have cancelled what I had on that morning, rolled my sleeves up, and give him hand to try and sort it out, luckily, he was on the phone to ‘Jimmy,’ Main Street’s well-known window cleaner who was on his way to give Scott some much-needed help. I only hope Scott’s Landlords, Lax’s helped him out too!
The rumour mill has its hat on again, and many people are second-guessing as to what new businesses are going where, and why and what for. I love that people hear one thing and then makeup ten other things themselves to make the story sound better or feasible. Let’s see what the signs say, the signs that go above the door, not the ones in the air!
Why do you use local businesses?
This week, I joined a live Instagram session with like-minded people, who, like me, shout about using local and how we have seen changes in how people spend their money. Changes have happened because of Covid restrictions, have you too seen a change in your shopping habits? Whether you’re buying online, or walking down the high street, or using local tradespeople, are you more conscientious about where you buy it from, who’s made it, where the materials have come from, meeting the makers, or just happy to meet the people behind the business you now love to shop at? If you have changed your habits, I hope it remains, now you’ve realised how good it is supporting local independent businesses. Our footfall is doing ok at the minute and I hope it continues to get better when everything re-opens on Monday, as there will be even bigger reasons to be local. Keep shopping, because every local habit you change, has a change on what’s local.

Planning
Some of you may have seen the land on Selby Road (opposite side to The Gaping Goose) where there are areas left, or an empty bungalow ready to be knocked down to create entrances for the new houses, soon to start being built. New signs will soon be erected soon giving information about the developers and the house choices being built. So we continue to see the growth of Garforth; is it good we’re expanding by another 200+ homes? People need homes, and towns need to grow, I see this as a benefit to towns, because look at the changes that have happened since the Redrow estate came along, our house prices have seen a significant rise, and businesses want to be a part of our high street. I’ve also seen the rise in SUVs, is this a change in new people coming in as there are so many huge cars about? However, new homes just have to have some consideration as to where they go, for one, I was not in favour of Redrow coming along, but now I overlook it, it’s actually much better than breeze blocks, and the traffic is so far manageable, I suppose we will just see when everything is back to normal, normal how the traffic will continue to flow!
