Thank February for that

Yeah, we made it, we made it through the 108 weeks of January and, we got to payday, it looks so pretty doesn’t it?  People are mentioning Spring like it’s next week.  I know February is a short month, but hold on, we’re only just seeing the lighter nights at 5.15 pm.  As humans, we always want more than what we have today, but so glad January is out of the way.

Make Sense of it

It’s Sense and not Scope that has opened a charity shop where Tippl used to be.  I’m sure the questions from our community will be, ‘Do we need another charity shop?’ and I’m sure some twisted faces that could resemble a toby jug will also be added to the groans.  You need to see it like this, the space is huge and very expensive, and the only option was ever going to be 1. A chain store 2. A restaurant or 3. A charity shop.  Whoever took it on, would always leave a congregation of unhappy toby jug faces, and it’s generally the people who don’t really shop on our high street…

… Let’s make sense of it, Charity shops are changing, and that’s because generation Z is buying second-hand clothing.  1. Because it helps our environment 2. Because it’s trending as fashionable and 3. The older the vintage the better.

Charity shops will bring a new generation to our high streets which in turn will let them see what else is on offer – you know me, always looking to the positive.  The irony is, the people who are still hankering for a ’90s restaurant (all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet) on our high street, have kids who want to wear 90s clothing!

The Crusader

Hearing more rumours about what type of bar/pub it will be when it is reopened. Put a fence around it?

I was watching Dragons Den last night, a start-up company called Shocal (derived from shop and local) this type of branding gives me a toby jug face.  Do you remember Brymar, are they still going, it was Bryan and Margaret right?   Anyhow, Shocal are looking to bring the high street online, everything all in one place so you can order and have it delivered, it’s an idea I once thought about too, but ShopAppy and Pronto have tried in our area, and it will only work for food companies, especially with the commission rate they’re going to charge at 18%, it’s certainly cheaper than the likes of Deliveroo and JustEat, but you need to ask why they charge 40% and why they haven’t branched out to other types of businesses! Shocal has been created by two enthusiastic blokes talking about an idea over the fence; I wonder if they used their high street before? I really wish them luck, but I also hope they’re ready for the reality of working with local business owners about being online, it’s going to take a lot of money, self-belief, trust, and energy.  Leaving it on a positive, imagine where your business could be this time next year if you start it now!  Ideas can sometimes work

Dorothy Anne’s will soon be no more, certainly within the next few weeks, so be quick with the great things on offer for sale, and stock that Anne will need to sell.  You might find a right bargain….

  • Things do to not far away https://www.live-for-today.com/activities/ At Hazelwood Castle not too far away, there is this great company called Live For Today they do lots of fabulous activities.  I went at the weekend and took part in rifle shooting, I loved it and was glad to see my muscle memory was still in place from my sea cadet days.  They have lots to do, quad biking, axe throwing, orienteering, and many other things, check it out, great for you or a company team building day
