While King Charlie Charles III prepares for his Coronation, donning his best suit and finest robes, and polishing his jewels… on his newly fitted crown, I’ll be at home with my family, including the older members, enjoying a spread of sandwiches, pork pies, quiche, coleslaw, crisps, and coronation cupcakes, watching all the pomp and ceremony unfold. I wouldn’t call myself a royalist or an anti-royalist, but if some of my tax money is going towards this event, I’m going to enjoy the party. Life is too short to pass up on opportunities to have fun and enjoy yourself. I’m thrilled to see many houses in Garforth decorated in celebration, with bunting wafting in the wind. While this may not be the last coronation in my lifetime, I know it could be for some of the older members in my family who have been brought up to be royalists. So, let’s celebrate with them, for them.
Out together
I discovered ‘Out Together’ today, a fantastic charity that is committed to fostering an inclusive community by providing support for older LGBTQ+ individuals across Yorkshire, helping them stay healthy, happy, and connected. It’s such a wonderful initiative! However, in Garforth, I’m not aware of any comparable places or spaces where all communities can gather together. It would be incredible to have something like Garforth Pride here in our community. Just thinking about it gives me chills – it would surely shake things up a little bit! Here’s their Instagram page so you too can follow, join or show an older friend you might know https://bit.ly/3pfvlUA
I strongly believe that everyone deserves respect and equal treatment, regardless of their background, beliefs, or preferences, so I find it difficult when some make it an obstacle because they’re stuck. While I struggle with the opinions of older white men, the truth is that it’s a demographic that has caused me more grief than any other during my time in this job. I’ve been on the receiving end of derogatory comments such as “What do you know, you’re a woman” and “a woman in IT?” and faced opposition when introducing new ideas. It’s disheartening to receive threatening emails from individuals who want to maintain the status quo and resist any form of diversity. I understand that this behaviour is not representative of all older white men, but even a few individuals can make a significant impact, and if we had a local group for the LGBTQ+ community I know it would have them voicing their archaic opinions. So I say, let’s shake it a bit more and ruffle that boa
