Congratulations to Andy and the GFest Team for organising yet another fantastic event! Despite the weather, the participation and enjoyment of the good Garfonian were not dampened at this wonderful local gathering, which also raises a generous sum for a meaningful cause.

However, it’s worth mentioning that the security at the entrance could have been more thorough with bag searches.  I spent only £10 for a gin and a pint of black sheep, much cheaper round than any bar i would go to. Let’s continue supporting the individual produce and products on offer as such events as they are essential for the community. Remember, it’s just one day to enjoy the entertainment,  Look  – I’m not drunk and still dancing like the green goddess I was – the best thing I ever bought

 

Leeds 2023

Has so far, been incredible, buzzing with numerous fabulous events in and around the city. Last Sunday, I had the pleasure of attending our very own local event organised by dedicated volunteers. The event showcased the coolest aspects of our area, giving us insights into all the wonderful happenings, and even featuring an outstanding performance by our beloved Garforth Community Choir

 

Going, going…gone

It’s disheartening to read that several beloved favourites bid farewell to the city; Chow Down is among those about to close its doors. The struggle independent businesses face, especially after the challenges of Covid, is now compounded by the soaring cost of living. Now, more than ever, it’s crucial to support what you love whenever you can. Let’s rally together to sustain these businesses both locally and within the city.  Small businesses do tend to give warnings that they are struggling… listen closely.  Supporting independent businesses is crucial in today’s fast-paced and competitive world. The phrase “use them or lose them” carries significant weight, as these unique establishments are the lifeblood of our communities, and when you go away on holiday, try to shop independent too

Leeds 2023 – NEST (Tuesday 5th September – Saturday 9th September) – Let’s pretend we’re ahead – It’s 2050 and climate change is sharing the natural world.  Now that the bird watchers can no longer watch, Maya’s home will never be the same again….

Nest is going to be a wonderful and entertaining as well as an important movement that will be held at RSPB St Aiden’s, if you click on the QR code, you will get a discounted ticket entry, be mindful that there are limited tickets ( a fair few ) but limited per evening.  They are hoping to sell 1,500 tickets over the 5 events, so approx. 400 per night.

Locally, it has stirred up some controversy and perhaps some important questions as to whether the wildlife should be disturbed by holding on to such a performance.

I met up with Will this week, he’s Leeds 2023 Marketing Executive, and we had a great chat about this event whilst stood in St Aiden’s whilst they were capturing some great visuals for their promotional pieces that you will be able to see soon.  Please do politely ask the organisers should you have any questions, but here are my answers to a few that have come in since sharing this amazing local event.

  • Visuals are a powerful tool in raising awareness about climate change, as they help people grasp the magnitude of the issue.
  • Embracing a local event like this, instead of it being held on the other side of Leeds, allows us to connect with our community and appreciate what’s right in our backyard.
  • Despite this being LCC land, it’s encouraging to see the RSPB backing this event, showing that collaboration can lead to positive outcomes for wildlife conservation.
  • The thoughtful use of areas like St. Aiden’s and other wildlife-rich locations showcases careful planning, ensuring minimal impact on the environment. (don’t forget St Aidens runs lots of other things and lots of things happen, Running, cycling, walking, playing, and 10k runs)
  • Amid global challenges like the recent wildfires, initiatives like this event can amplify the urgency for action and secure a lasting place for the wonderful wildlife areas. – It has been recorded as the hottest July across the world
  • Adopting a negative mindset towards anything new or different can harm your own mental well-being. Take a moment to discover the positive impact this event can have on you and the environment.
