There’s no denying it the sunshine has finally made an appearance, and Garforth is glowing! But while we’re busy soaking up the rays and sipping something cold in the garden, a greenfly cloud seems to have arrived right on cue. Thanks to the warmer, more humid weather, we’ve had a full week of greenflies making themselves known, in the garden, by the windows, and even loitering near your brew…rude!
So, if you’d rather not share your fresh air with a swarm of tiny intruders, here’s a little tip:
👉 Spray peppermint or eucalyptus oil around window sills and door frames.
They hate the stuff — and it might just keep them from floating in like unwanted guests at your BBQ this weekend.
Because honestly… there’s nothing better than having the back door open, a gentle breeze rolling through, and a cold Peroni in hand. 🍺
Here’s hoping this weather sticks around — and the greenfly decide to go holiday somewhere else.

A HUGE LOCAL ACHIEVEMENT – Garforth Karate Academy Instructors Strike Gold at National Championships
If you haven’t heard of Garforth Karate Academy, where have you been? More so since we published their amazing results at EKF National Championships 2025 – Remi Jurgilaitis, Garforth’s head Instructor shares this amazing news:
Instructors from Garforth Karate Academy brought home national titles at the English Karate Federation (EKF) National Championships, held in Sheffield.
Sensei Eilidh Owens, coached by Sensei Matt Price, delivered a stellar performance, winning double gold — first in the Junior Team Kata and again in the Senior Female Team Kata category. Her dedication, skill, and leadership continue to inspire students and coaches alike. Remi Jurgilaitis, head instructor at Garforth Karate Academy, also stood on the top step of the podium as part of the JKS England Senior Male Kumite Team, who were crowned English Champions. Garforth Karate Academy is proud to be part of JKS England, one of the top karate associations in the country, which finished second overall in the association medal table — taking home the highest number of medals at the championships.
These achievements highlight the high level of coaching and competitive experience available right here in Garforth.
Importantly, and very cool to have this on our doorstep – , Garforth Karate Academy is part of a recognised Olympic pathway. As members of JKS England, we belong to the English Karate Federation (EKF) — the only national body recognised by the World Karate Federation (WKF) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This means our students can train and compete at the highest level, with a real opportunity to chase their Olympic dreams.

🚧 Yellow Lines Arrive on Ninelands Lane – What’s Happening in Garforth?

If you’ve driven down Ninelands Lane in Garforth recently, you might have spotted something new — the proposed yellow lines have already made an appearance, following the recent Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) being put into place. On Thursday, I noticed the paint was already down, signalling that Leeds City Council’s Highways team is moving ahead with the plans outlined in the TRO.
💡 My Proposal for Intermittent Yellow Lines
Back in 2022, (you may already know if you’re an avid blog reader) I contacted the council with a cost-effective idea: intermittent yellow lines on Ninelands Lane. At the time, the suggestion wasn’t dismissed in fact, it was received quite positively, with the response being that a TRO would need to be in place first before any changes could be considered.
Now that we do have the TRO in place, I’ve followed up again to see if they’ll consider implementing my original idea. It’s an approach that could ease traffic pressure without over-restricting residential parking a balanced solution for both road safety and practicality.
Yellow Lines on Main Street Too
As you’ll see in the current plans, yellow lines are also being added further down Main Street, which actually makes a lot of sense given the parking and visibility issues we’ve all seen there over the years.
🙌 Keeping Garforth Moving
Let’s hope we hear back soon from Highways with a decision to move forward on expanding the yellow line plan. I’ve even offered to sponsor the paint that’s how strongly I feel – we just need to keep things moving rather than creating an unsafe road or a place where people keep getting fed up navigating Garforth and being put off travelling to Main Street!
