We’re inching toward the halfway mark of the year, can you believe it? May gave us a bit of warmth (finally!), and dare we say, even a few days of proper sunshine. Let’s hope it sticks around for the rest of the summer. You know how much better everything feels when the sun’s out… even if we’re only admiring it longingly from the office window! bah

One more term and school’s out for summer– does it frighten you, or do you love it?  If you’re a grandparent, does that mean you’re on duty?  Or as a parent, the thought of juggling the 6-week holidays is a real headache?  I love August, everywhere seems a little quieter, and the sun is mostly on side – but not too hot, please!

Things don’t always go to plan; have you not seen Clarkson’s Farm – planning isn’t always on your side! A message from Huddle cafe:

I had a message from Amanda,  “Hey Christine, things have started moving and we finally have the builders in doing the renovations. Until they’re finished, we’re not sure on an exact date for opening (we’ve had our hopes dashed 3 times already), but if everything stays on track, we’re hoping for a July opening. 😊 We’ll be shouting about it from the rooftops when we know”

Garforth against Giggle Fibre are still keeping up the good fight 

🏛 The Action Team Takes the Fight to Westminster

In May, our brilliant action team headed down to Westminster to meet with MP Chris Bryant, raising concerns about the rollout of unsightly telegraph poles being used for new fibre infrastructure.

As we’ve mentioned in our vlogs, blogs, and posts before, while we’ve seen it happening with Giggle Fibre, there’s nothing stopping other fibre companies from doing exactly the same. One provider starts it… the rest often follow.

That’s why the fight isn’t over — far from it.

🚨 Beware the “Next Week Decorator” Boom in Garforth

Yesterday, I shared a post about the surge in painting and decorating trades popping up across Garforth. Since the lovely article from Manning Stainton (yes, Mr Manning himself) declared Garforth one of the top towns to watch in 2025, it seems we’ve had a sudden and suspicious rise in “highly recommended” decorators popping up on social media.

We’re talking tradespeople offering to start next week, bringing “free paint” and promises galore. Now, maybe it’s just a coincidence — or maybe it’s a sign that some less-than-qualified folks are jumping on the bandwagon.

✋ Before You Book That Painter Off Facebook…

We all love a good recommendation, but before you trust someone just because they were tagged in a comment thread, please… do your homework.

Ask these simple questions:

🎯 Can they show you recent work they’ve actually done?
🎯 Do they have real photos, not just polished stock images?
🎯 Are they active on social media with genuine reviews?

Because let’s be honest — someone’s cousin Barbara who “might be free tomorrow” probably isn’t the decorator you want repainting your hallway.

If you’re in a hurry and skip the research, you might end up paying twice — once for the botched job, and again to have it fixed properly.

🛣️ Leeds City Council… Still Waiting

Last month, I shared that I’d emailed Leeds City Council Highways (again) following up on their latest TRO (Traffic Regulation Order) plans — and floated my practical idea: intermittent yellow lines in hotspot areas to ease congestion, particularly where parking is causing traffic build-up.

✨ It’s a simple concept — not about blanket restrictions, but thoughtful measures where traffic flow really matters.

Well… still nothing back.

I hope no one’s advised them to ignore me (can you imagine?) — I’m not after credit or fanfare, just genuinely want good, workable ideas to be considered. Because at the end of the day, it’s about making local life better for everyone.

Let’s see if a reply comes through in time for next month’s blog. If not… expect me to politely kick the can again (and again, and again).
